How Did Palpatine TORTURE Maul Into Becoming His Apprentice?

Maul was born to the leader of the night sister clan, Mother Talazin. Talzin was a power-hungry individual and sought to become the apprentice of Darth Sidious. But Sisious realised Maul would be far more useful and forced Talzin to throw Maul into a dark pit as part of a test. Maul was beaten and physically abused by other Zabraks and he grew to hate Sidious and his mother. But one day, rumours swirled around Dathormir that a powerful force user would be coming to take an apprentice. Maul used the force to escape from captivity, but when he realised it was Palpatine, he lashed out in anger, force-choking the Zabraks who had beaten him in captivity. Ecstatic with this show of the dark side, Palpatine declared Maul the winner, taking him as his apprentice.

For those interested in Maul's life, there is an amazing young adult novel about his life, from his early childhood to his rescue by Opress, called "The Wrath of Darth Maul", written by Ryder Windham. There's actually a pretty cool chapter in which Sidious tells Maul the whole story of the Sith, mentioning the names of Naga Shadow, Exar Kun, Ulic Qel-Droma, Revan, Malak, Skere Kaan and Bane. Truly recommended.
