How Darth Maul Became Star Wars' Most Complicated Villain

When introduced in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul was quickly the stand out character. With his evil demeanor, black and red makeup, and double sided lightsaber, audiences were obsessed with this new Sith Lord. Though he was cut down too early at the end of Phantom Menace, it would be the Star Wars animated shows Clone Wars and Rebels that would give Darth Maul new life and transform him into one of the best villains in all of Star Wars. Without the dedicated time to developing Darth Maul, he may well have been just a flash in the pan.

Just a correction, Solo takes place between The Clone Wars and Rebels. Maul is the head of Crimson Down because of the Shadow Collective. He wasn’t resurrected get again. Still a shame we didn’t get more of that though

Maul in Phantom menace not being a developed character completely works to his advantage. His spontaneous appearances and lack of dialogue make him feel more akin to an apex predator demonic entity who appears out of thin air and is tasked with killing the anti christ's father thus ensuring the end of the world.

Worth noting that Solo: A Star Wars Story takes place before Rebels. The video kinda makes it seems that he was resurrected again.

Ever since clone wars maul has unquestionably been my favourite. His story fascinates me and it’s interesting to see how he continually gets in his own way. In clone wars season 7 when he’s a step ahead of everybody but can’t do anything still, it’s so interesting to me what could have happened and how well he knew Palpatine.

That Rebels episode is his final appearance. Solo takes place years before that rebels episode. C'man now.

I'm not sure about that comment about Savage and Maul's relationship and Maul using him not going anywhere is supposed to mean.

Their relationship is pretty clear. Though Maul insists that Savage be the apprentice of the two after their one scuffle to decide that where Savage just wanted to be equals anyway, the two never seem to fight or conspire against each other unlike basically every other sith in the whole franchise. They clearly deeply care for each other and have each others' backs. I loved their relationship in Clone Wars. And you read into Maul's backstory you can see why he even enforced a Master and Apprentice relationship at all. Because thats all he knows.

Darth Maul became one of my favorite characters after I read the journal series as a kid. It had more depth than I expected and made me think about how he would have been if he was saved from the sith as a child. I can't help but headcannon that he would have been a great jedi apprentice.
