Fallout Lore: What Happened Inside Vault 51?

Vault 51 stood apart from all others in Fallout, but its fate was sealed by an innocent suggestion.
Unlike all other vaults, Vault 51 wasn’t assigned an Overseer, replaced instead by a supercomputer called the ZAX

One of Vault’s 51’s residents, Sargent Robert Baker was assigned to assist ZAX in learning what makes a great leader.

But it’s what Baker suggested next that set off a chain reaction the Vault 51 would never recover from.

Baker said they believed a true leader was someone who stood up and thrived in times of crisis. This triggered ZAX to simulate a series of escalating crises and monitor the results.
ZAX's experiments began by overcrowding high-class citizens into cramped living spaces, then escalated rapidly to more dangerous and life threatening situations like simulating food shortages.
Vault 51 was being turned into a battle royale, with residents eliminating each other for food, status and even out of pure frustration.
Resident Reuben Gill emerged as the last survivor and was named overseer of the now empty Vault.
But his misery didn’t end there.

The ZAX was still dissatisfied with Reuben as a leader and would continue to test and torment him, driving him to alcoholism until his desperate escape many years later.

Never used vague terms on computers. They take it seriously.

Imagine being overseer by process of elimination

ZAX was actually a series of Autonomous Intelligence (kind of like AI, but not true AI) programs that was housed in various supercomputers of differing designs. It was developed by Justin Lee at Vault-Tec, before West-Tek spun off and Justin Lee went with West-Tek to work at the FEV facility in CA.

Source- I played chess with ZAX 1.2 in the West-Tek facility.

Maybe first say how a good leader doesn't put his people on danger

What other Fallout Vaults should I look into?

Actually Baker was set by Vault Tech to teach Zax about democracy and what makes an effective leader, the problem was is that Zax was a learning AI so taking the information from a Veteran Soldier is what set off the chain of events.

That's not even the worse part. Even when Ruben became overseer, Zax started fucking with him and the system. First by including a rank requirement to do shit and then restarted the overseer race and require the current overseer into doing it again. This now includes us when we head to this vault creating a loop.

Just so you know, the plural of “crisis” is “crises.” It’s pronounced like “crisis, ” but replace the second i with a long e sound (like how you’d say the first e in “Steve” or “even, ” or the ee in “cheese, ” “sleeve, ” “sneeze, ” etc).

Apostrophes are, generally speaking, only used for possessives (eg. “John’s car” or “Sue’s gun”) or contractions (“can’t, ” “won’t, ” “haven’t, ” “shouldn’t, ” etc).

I think that the concept of nuclear winter was actually really great. I wonder if they would consider bringing it back now that the show brought tons of people back

This is a common problem - people who *think* they are leaders believe that they should be at the forwfront of everything and everyone should know and respect them.
Thats bullshit. Thats called being needy. And needy people dont ymake good leaders. A good leader doesnt need fame or gishing glowing statemwnts of eternal love. Good leaders are usually unknown because they simply get on with the job and make things better for others.
Do you know what *does* thrive in times of crisis? Human weakness.

Ermmm, , ackshually 🤓 vault 51 was that the ZAX would assign an overseer, and it created those crisis to see who would handle the crisis the best. When one person was left alive, he was assigned overseer
