5 Ways to NOT Get Lost When Hiking & Backpacking // Are you afraid of getting lost when you’re out hiking and backpacking? Want to know how you can help yourself stay found while out on trail? The BEST navigation tool to use in the backcountry is the one you’re going to use AND KNOW HOW TO USE.

In this video, I’m going to share with you 5 ways to NOT get lost when hiking and backpacking and feature 2 of my favorite navigation tools I use whenever I’m out on trail. I’ll feature two of my favorite navigation tools I love using when hiking and backpacking: the FarOut Guide app, which I used exclusively while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail this year and onX Backcountry, which I use everywhere else, including anytime I opted for an alternate trail along my PCT hike this year.

onX Backcountry and the FarOut Guide app are both easy-to-use navigation apps you can use out in the backcountry that fit in the palm of your hand.

I’ll provide tips on how you can use both of these navigation tools to help plan your hiking and backpacking trip before getting out on trail. I’ll show how to use these navigation tools to help stay found and NOT get lost while you’re out hiking in the backcountry. I’ll also show you how to use both of these navigation tools to find important information about the trail and the area you’re hiking in like water sources, tentsites, land management information and current weather forecasts while you’re out on trail.

Awesome timing in this video! I just got an email from FarOut that almost all of their maps AND the unlimited subscription are currently on sale! 🎉 It’s an awesome deal for anyone looking to hike a long distance trail in the near future.

This was a great idea. Fear of getting lost is a major impediment for me where I now live in the east (I was never worried living in the west including Hawaii, Arizona, Oregon and California- because there are more landmarks, they are visible above the horizon and not hidden in a green tunnel, and the trails are better kept without tons of herd trails). Having a satellite communicator has been a step in the right direction because I at least know I have a way out. would be nice to have some comparisons of pros and cons of different apps.
