Diagnosing stuck ford solenoid

They typically fail by not activating,
But everyonce in awhile they'll just stay on even with the key pulled out of the ignition, the engine will keep cranking out of control.
It will scare the shit out of you at first, but if you remain calm, get the hood open and remove the negative battery terminal you'll be fine.

You can get it home by disconnecting the negative wire of the solenoid with a pair of pliers, or a cresent wrench...
reconnect your negative on your battery, go and make sure your ignition is on and the truck is in neutral..
Then, with your body not touching the truck, touch the negative solanoid wire to the negative post of the solanoid.
The engine will crank over and fire off. Just let go of the negative wire and your good to go.
MAKE SURE YOUR TRUCK IS IN NEUTRAL OR YOU CAN/ WILL RUN YOURSELF OVER.

I have a '84 econoline and the starter would not stop cranking. After a quick YouTube search, I came across your clip. Purchased a new solenoid and just like that problem fixed. Thanks for saving me time and money. I thought for sure I would have to call a mechanic to go and fix it. Thanks again for uploading this video.

Thanks for sharing. It would have been very helpful for a multi meter setting for us newbies.

I got a new one months ago and every now and then it would stick. I got sick of hitting it so I just recently got another new one and installed all new battery wires and starter wire. It’s stuck twice already! Mine is Napa brand. Someone suggested motor craft but I’ve read ppl still had the issue with motorcraft too. I’m at a loss and confused

I have a battery charging issue. Battery is good. Charges fine. And starter is ok. Have had no problems with it. The alternator was replaced recently with rebuilt one. It could be bad. But assume its ok. The alternator is not fully charging the battery (have checked the alternator and it appears to be putting out 14.5 volts. Have not checked the starter solenoid (1994 Ford Ranger, external mount solenoid like you are testing here). Could the solenoid be keeping a full current from going to the battery? At the positive terminal at the battery, it is reading 12 volts plus. Not the 14.5 volts that should be coming from the alternator.

Could a bad solenoid & the wire from the starter to solenoid cause the battery or alternator to malfunction know where the car dies. Ford mustang. I like test it with a 12 V and no light popped on.

If it keeps happening check add another ground cable to the block. Will prevent the arching when disengaging which welds it shut

I just replaced the solenoid and I'm getting voltage when putting the battery back on, big sparks, along with the engine trying to turn over even though it's off, is the starter most likely the problem then? Possibly stuck on?

Well, I installed a new ignition solenoid and now when I put the positive on my batter and the other black on the solenoid I get 6volts not 12? I do the positive on the solenoid to the battery ground and I get 12V? Weird. I have fusible links from the batter to the solenoid. What do you think?

what causes them to go bad... I changed one and about an hour later it died on me. change it again then five minutes later it died again. Starter keeps engaging... Let me know your thoughts. 2002 ford f150 xl. Thanks

Get a powermaster gear reduction starter. The solenoid is built in to the starter and will last much longer.
You have to scrap the remote solenoid and rewire the excite wire down to the starter.
