If your starter is not working and want to test the motor only, make sure you put the positive terminal on the motor stud. If not then the motor will not start.

Yes, & if you get a replacement starter these days, test it before installing. New don't mean good. Save you pulling it back off.

Just because it spins doesn’t mean it works. Had some that will free spin but if you put a load on it not enough to spin the engine over

Yes jumping the starter solenoid will start the car if the key is in the on position.and get you going but to fix it for good instead of spending lots of money on a brand new Gm starter
Many people me being one of them uses a ford starter selinoid with an extra battery cable to leghten the starter cable to move the selinoid up and away from the starter it works just as good if not better because it’s no longer right next to the motor and exhaust pipes where the high heat kills the selinoid time and time again yes you can keep the original Gm starter and just wire in a ford starter selinoid and that will work just fine and also not only is it better but cost is a lot cheaper then purchasing a new Gm starter and it happening all over again in a few months if that it is just wired up to the original Gm starter with a 2 foot battery cable anywhere in the engine bay with the extra battery cable going to the original Gm starter sometimes it last but most times it will fry the selinoid all over again causing the issue over and over with the ford selinoid wired into the Gm starter I have had no further issues at all and the car starts great every time.
You can look it up on line
Using a ford starter selinoid with a Gm starter it leaves the old Gm selinoid right where it is and having the ford selinoid up and away from the direct high heat fixes the problem for good
Hopefully this will help a lot of people fixing there starter solenoid issue and keep them from being stuck because of it. Look into it I’m glad I did . Real simple to do and fixes it for good .

Don’t forget to tell people to use 12gauge wire not 6 gauge. Although u shouldn’t do this if u don’t understand electricity

Thank you. I was able to start my semi with your instruction after my starter wouldn't crank.

On our 5.7 Ford f-350 there is an uninsulated heavy gauge wire between the solenoid and the starter - about 2 inches long. so I jumped that with main power wire going to the solenoid. The leads on my remote starter got hot just clicking a few times but the starter didn't budge. I might try banging on it. I thought these things were serviceable so I wanted to isolate the issue.

If the plunger doesn't engage its bad change it or rebuild it

Most starters now have the solenoid as part of the body so even if your starter motor is good, you would need a complete starter assembly regardless. Good hack video though. I need to make test wires with switch.

What does it mean if it works fine but the ignition won’t turn it over.

Yeah, it looks like you didn't bypass the solanoid it was throwing the cog.

But if a cable is connected to the solenoid does that mean the solenoid is bypassed?

Hey question so i have a 2013 f150 ecoboost and the ground solenoid wont crank the starter when the wire is connected neither will a ground cable from jumper cables but if i connect the ground cable from the jumper cables onto the metal of the starter it cranks just fine

Which BEGGS the question, what about if it's Bendix drive?

Why does this even matter? Lol. If your solenoid is bad, your starter is bad. If the motor is bad, congratulations, youre gunna get a brand new solenoid with your brand new starter motor.
