Ford Truck Starter Solenoid Replacement -Won't Crank, no start

Replacing a fender mounted starter solenoid can be fairly simple but there are a few details that should be checked. Proper testing can determine if the original solenoid is defective but sometimes a new part can be a dud. I had an intermittent start (click then would grab) for awhile then it just wouldn't start at all, just click. I followed your steps and noticed when I checked between the positive battery and the negative solonoid it would show voltage, but it was fluctuating up and down. Then when I jumped the solonoid it just clicked, no start. I was about to go buy a new solonoid and new starter when logic kicked in and I thought that I must just not be getting enough power. So I started tugging on wires and the positive cables pulled out of the terminal. I took it off and flattened it a bit to be tighter, re-installed and it cranked right up. Saved me alot of time, money, blood, sweat and tears. Thanks.

This repair video is four years ago. I enjoyed the pointers and just got to say, most ordered parts for my 1985 Ford Ranger came up as 171 2.8L V6.The SAE mechanic specs in the Chilton s Truck and Van Repair Manual 1979-1986 show clearly in both Truck and Unit Sections plus Electrical 173 2.8L V6.This is a must for myself.i hope you identify with this .And a young man I think from around Alabama or Georgia but on You Tube showed how the BK ground wire from the Negative Battery Terminal pigtail to the front of the Ford Trucks would rust out or weaken the battery .I agreed .So he ran a specified AWG strong Ground to the Alternator Bracket .A Strong ground.I used military silicone wrap tape to seal my ground points.The Solonoid Relay I learned from Garysgaragemahal.That the newer Starters I think 2003 because they can be used in the earlier Fords in case 1985-1988 Fords, to bypass the Solonoid Relay all together.(lI didn't do it though ).The Screw Driver works! I'm going through the same thing to on my 2001 ford f-150 xlt 5.4 v8 tritón. I'm going to go ahead and do that, by the way it was a great video and good presentation step by step which that's the correct way to do it, some just show you but some don't explain step by step and taking their time. Yes, I’ve gone through the same thing over the years. One observation is that the negative terminal on the solenoid that you referred to is actually the positive terminal coming from the battery. Where the other terminal will still be positive going down to the starter motor. Great video Glen and should help folks to be aware of inferior parts.

The first test you do around 4:45 (positive battery terminal to left post on solenoid), if you dont get voltage, what do you think the issue is? I previously had voltage, replaced the solenoid and starter, and still didnt start, not upon checking this again I no longer get voltage on that test. As far as I can tell, my grounds are fine, relays are fine, fuses are fine, and connections are clean. I just get 1 hard click when trying to start followed by a smaller soft click somewhere else. Battery reads proper volts and wont start with jump pack.

Thank you for showing how to test the solenoid. I just tested mine, it's not clicking or doing anything. I was thinking it was the alarm system messed up again. I still want to remove the alarm system because it's an aftermarket piece of junk, sometimes it runs and sometimes it doesn't

I have a 2003 350 superduty duelie with a 6.0 I will get in and turn the key sometime it starts sometime it don't I have looked up and down the firewalls on both sides and can't find the seliniod you are showing am I looking in the wrong spot

When I turn the key I can hear a click up to under the hood which I think is the relay. But when I try your screwdriver trick it sparks a little but does not start. Does that mean starter solenoid is bad?
