Shift work makes this extremely difficult, but I still respect your guidance and info that you share

Agree. If and when I do have a problem sleeping, and/or wake up to urinate, I just read/watch videos/etc., until I get tired again and try not to worry about it. Once in a while I don't go back to sleep at all.

As a student, i find it impossible to have a regular sleep schedule. Somedays I’m chanced to sleep whenever I want but most days it’s just impossible.

Dr Rena, you are a genius and thank you !!! I need to do what you said, I have Multiple Sclerosis so it seem like no matter how much sleep I get, I feel exhausted when I wake up. I do wake up several times at night to urinate, so I will follow your advice and see if it helps me. I'm 59 years old, so I'll probably wake up at least once each night, but if it keeps me from making 3 or 4 trips to the bathroom every night, it's a victory for me.

back years ago I was employed on a river tugboat, it was half way decent money n excellent hot served meals 3x day, BUT the work shift hours were not conducive to receive a good night sleep, 6hrs on 6 hrs off ect....never a day or even a shift off, end of shift I took a shower then ate took approx. 1 hour, most people cannot sleep well on a full stomach, I was no different, at most I got around 4 hrs sleep, then time to get up n go back to work, it got extremely manotaness directly due to sleep deprivation n the demands of being a exhausted, woreout deckhand ....its life I lived n learned thanks DrM.

I've been a rotating shift worker for nearly 30 years, and I can tell you a thing or two about getting sleep. Your bedroom needs to be cave dark. I mean no light at all, not even a little bit from ANY source. A "nightcap" might make you sleepy, but you'll toss and turn in bed without getting quality sleep. Take a hot shower before bed. Take power naps if you get sleepy during the day. A 10 or 20 minute ride in dream world will make you feel like you just slept all night long. I use cannabis medicinally, so "one" hit before bed is very effective FOR ME. When I get up in the morning it's time for wake-and-bake, but that's for a different thread. You must sleep. I can't consume dairy before bed, either, and absolutely no sugar. I try to not eat within 4 hours of bed time. Sleeping on an empty stomach is MUCH better for you. Also, since I have post nasal drip all the time, I gargle and rinse out my sinuses with salt water, and then I use a nasal strip so I can easily breathe through my nose. You're supposed to sleep with your mouth closed. You shouldn't eat sugar anyway because it causes chronic inflammation which makes you uncomfortable all the time. Do NOT use melatonin. It's a hormone, and your body produces it already. It's that blue-light thing. Stretching before bed also makes you more comfortable. I sleep great regardless of which shift rotation I'm on. Hope all this info helps someone, because nobody ever offered me advice. I learned the hard way.

The funny thing is that my urologist said you should pee every 4 hours, which ideally includes walking up to pee at night. On the other hand doctors say you should get a full night's sleep. So which is it?

I recently started hearing the sound of my pulse in my head. Nobody can hear it but me and it’s loud. Keeps me up all day/night. I get maybe 3-4 hours sleep a day.
I need help!

I didn’t know blue light can affect sleep. Some mobile phones have blue light filters… which is the opposite of what should be.

I haven't had a "natural" night's sleep, or a nap, in many years. I'm seventy two. I take a prescription sleep aid every night. I have extreme anxiety disorder and PTSD, but I don't want to take all the medication doctors want me to take. So I compromise on the sleep aid.
