MY VIDEO MAKING GEAR:

I see many patients who have insomnia and most of the time they want sleeping tablets - But actually most pharmacists, GPs, nurse practitioners prefer not to recommend sleeping tablets. As insomnia can often be improved by changing your daytime and bedtime habits or by improving your bedroom environment.

See your GP, Pharmacist or Nurse Practitioner if you're still having difficulty getting to sleep after trying these techniques.

WHAT IS INSOMNIA?
Insomnia means poor sleep. About one third of adults do not get as much sleep as they would like. Poor sleep can mean:

• Not being able to get off to sleep.
• Waking up too early.
• Waking for long periods in the night.
• Not feeling refreshed after a night's sleep.

If you have poor sleep, particularly over a long period of time, it can severely affect your life, as it can cause:

• Tiredness (fatigue) and loss of energy in the daytime.
• Poor concentration.
• Loss of interest in usual activities.
Irritability.
• Depression and anxiety.

WHAT IS A NORMAL AMOUNT OF SLEEP?
About 6-9 hours per night is average for most adults. Most people establish a pattern that is normal for them in their early adult life. However, as you become older, it is normal to sleep less. For most people it takes less than thirty minutes to fall asleep.

So, everyone is different. What is important is that the amount of sleep that you get should be sufficient for you, and that you usually feel refreshed and not sleepy during the daytime.

HOW TO SLEEP BETTER?
Insomnia can often be improved by changing your daytime and bedtime habits or by improving your bedroom environment.

Making small changes may help you to get a good night's sleep. Try some of the methods below for a few weeks to see if they help.

See your GP, Pharmacist or Nurse Practitioner if you're still having difficulty getting to sleep after trying these techniques.

DAYTIME HABITS:
• Set a specific time for getting up each day. Try to stick to this time, seven days a week, even if you feel you haven't had enough sleep. This should help you sleep better at night.
• Don't take a nap during the day.
• Exercise daily, but don't exercise for at least four hours before going to bed.

BEDTIME HABITS:
• Stop drinking tea and coffee for a few hours before bedtime.
• Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking, particularly shortly before going to bed.
• Don't eat a big meal just before bedtime.
• Don't use back-lit electronic devices shortly before going to bed.
• Don't lie in bed feeling anxious about lack of sleep. Instead, get up, go to another room for about 20 minutes and do something else, such as reading or listening to soft music, before trying again.
• Write a list of your worries and any ideas to solve them before going to bed. This may help you forget about them until the morning.

BEDROOM ENVIRONMENT:
• Use thick blinds or curtains or wear an eye mask if the early morning sunlight or bright street lamps affect your sleep.
• Make sure your bedroom is at a comfortable temperature for sleeping.
• Wear ear plugs if noise is a problem.
• Don't use your bedroom for anything other than sleeping or sex. Avoid watching television, making phone calls, eating or working while you're in bed.

Dealt with this for 3 months straight. I just stopped caring about getting enough sleep one day and accepted it. I also made my bedroom a place of rest and relaxation. If I have a bad night now, like everyone does here and there. I just reset by going to my living room for 20 mins and then head back to bed when I'm ready, this is usually when I fall asleep fast. Also, I implement minor sleep restriction. Making sure I wake up at the same time everyday even if I have a bad nights sleep. This acts as a strong anchor, making me more sleepy at night. My biggest advice out of all this is, just stop caring and looking up blogs and videos on all of this crap. Try to find something else to occupy your mind. Easier said than done, but anyone can over come this. Just live today, because you don't know what tomorrow brings. Your body will reset and you will start sleeping great again (only took me a few day). Now go out and do something you love. And if you cant sleep...who cares! You can do it!

I still have some sleep problems, but I have learned that it’s okay. This happens to EVERYONE, you are NOT alone and definitely don’t be scared of bedtime! What has helped me is just breathing deeply and exhaling, once you find your “comfy” spot for bed, try your best not to move, no matter how much your body or brain wants you too. Eventually, after some time, your body will start to give up and relax, and you’ll be bored enough that your brain will eventually relax too. It’s just really important not to worry about not sleeping. It’s okay, if you can’t sleep that night, you can sleep during the day if you have time. Music doesn’t work for me, but what I found very helpful was Vicks vapor rub or any oils that you can put near your nostrils so you can smell the scent and rubbing some on your temples will help sooth any headaches and calm your brain down. If all else fails, there’s medication out there for you! Just do your best, and don’t overthink about it. Go to sleep when you feel sleepy enough and just go to sleep, don’t worry about anything else.

When Im about to sleep, I close my eyes and think about all of the dumb and bad things I did in my life. This causes me to not get any sleep and it happens frequently.

One of the most important things you can do to get back to sleeping is "Sun Gazing" most of us aren't getting enough sunlight. The sun has Melatonin & Serotonin, which helps w/the sleep wake cycle. Most of us are lazy & don't do what's necessary when we have a lot of trouble sleeping. Sometimes it boils down to good old fashion hard work!

My problem is, I go to sleep at 11 or 12pm and I’m still awake with my eyes closed at 2am... I don’t know why.
Last summer was completely ruined because I would stay up til the sun literally rised.
