Why you should consider upgrading to 12GB RAM with the Ryzen APU or other Integrated graphics.
Especially when you consider that use lose 2GB or more as hardware reserved or a portion of usable RAM.

If you have a Laptop or desktop PC that is using an AMD Ryzen APU or Athlon APU you will find that the motherboard or chipset with automatically reserve a section of your system RAM for the graphics adaptor.

It usually will be something like this
4GB System RAM with be approx 3.95GB for Windows and 512MB for the APU or graphics adaptor. Roughly one eighth 1/8 of the RAM avaialable.

Moving to 8GB will actually then take a quarter or 1/4 of the RAM or 2GB for the APU leaving around 5.95GB for Windows or whatever OS you have.

Upgrading to 12GB (4GB + 8GB) Will still take 2GB from the available RAM leaving you with around 10GB free so this is around a sixth or 1/6 which still ins't great but is the best option when on a budget. Ideally i would recommend 16GB for a little extra breathing room and hopefully a matched pair of RAM but it isn't entirely necessary.

Hopefully this will be helpful for anyone in a similar situation and thinking of upgrading there APU based system.

I have to be honest Mike. I misread the title as 128GB and my first thought was "Bloody hell I can't afford that !"

Thanks for the video, Mike! I think that many people are unaware of the fact that most integrated APU (CPU+GPU) solutions actually take away from system RAM being "shared memory". Adding a 8gb stick to a 4gb system will make a huge difference! I do have to add that having paired RAM (ie: 2 identical sticks of memory) will allow the computer to run in dual channel memory mode, which really helps out with performance.

I have an HP laptop with 12gb ram. It will still run in dual channel with the extra 4gb at single channel for that extra beef. I can say that it’s much better than when I was at 8gb dual channel.

I have the same laptop but with Intel integrated graphics. Was easily able to swap out the 8gb stick for 16gb and it made a huge difference running Win11.

thanks for this video Mike! although I do have a worry, I’ve read that using 8gb+4gb will not activate the dual channel mode. Is that true? or will the dual channel mode only stops when it exceeds 8gb+ usage of ram in this scenario?

Two things I hate from laptops manufacturers: 1. The welded 4 GB RAM (Hey ASUS, can you hear me? XD), they put the lowest speed and size of RAM to save some money, and 2. You can't adjust the shared VRAM value (Hey Lenovo, this one is for you). So, the new RAM standard now is at least 12 GB of RAM on laptops and 16 GB on desktops. Thank you Mike!

Thank you sir for such an eye-opening info. I've been thinking for the past few months whether to upgrade my Acer Aspire 3, which is also Ryzen 5 3500u, to 8gb or 12gb. Now I have my answer.

Edit: I just added another 8 gigs of RAM earlier to the already built-in 4 gigs of my laptop (and it was my first time upgrading too!) But damn the difference is just too good, the speed and quality of everything is just much better and it really does feel like a newly bought laptop.

Morning Mike, Got the Kamikaze pro case coming today so I can finally build my pc, just a quick question how do you remove the dust filter on the front panel as you said you did with yours as it would have impeded airflow! Thanks mate x

hey Mike I wanna ask u, my laptop is acer aspire 3 A315-42-ROXU with AMD Ryzen 3 3200U but the RAM that already installed with 4GB 2666mhz but the maximum is 2400mhz but it's only read 2400mhz anyway in task manager and I've bought 8GB of RAM with a speed of 2666mhz so it would be 12GB 2666mhz, will my laptop be okay?

Hey I have an Acer Aspire 3 A315-41G Amd Ryzen 5 2500u with Vega 8, last 6 months I upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8GB. And the Vega 8 only has 1GB vram even though I have 8GB of RAM, is that normal? And then, if I would be upgrading my RAM to 12GB will Vega 8 having 2GB vram after upgrading? Thanks in advance :>
