Should You Get a New Computer? Or Even Upgrade?

Of course we want to, but SHOULD you? Let's be honest.

Upgrading your computer, or getting a new computer is not always an easy decision. We may try to convince ourselves that we need one, even though our current computer is fine and can do everything we want. Still, having the fastest performance, especially for a gaming PC, is nice. But maybe you don't need a whole new computer, maybe you can just get some upgraded computer hardware, like a graphics card or extra RAM. This video talks about all the options you have for upgrading, and whether you need to at all.

Upgrading from 4 to 8GB of memory made a HUGE difference for me. Everything now runs 50% faster and is very responsive even with a Hard disk drive.

My PC is about 5 years old, I am planning to upgrade it sometime in the next three years as it makes more sense to just wait.

Good to see a YouTuber with a normal looking PC desk, you can tell yours is actually used for work and not a show set piece to impress people with

Another advantage to the SSD is that even if you have 4 or less gig of ram, the memory paging in/out will also become much faster. You may find that you can live without a ram upgrade.

Just recently got a whole new rig last week. Old rig was an old 950 from 2009, gtx 670ftw, 12GBs ddr3 ram, and held up really well. It got to the point however to where I couldn't watch videos at 2x speed, hard drive was chugging hard, almost full and I didn't want to go through the struggle of clearing it, so I figured it was time for a new build. 7700k, 2x 1080ti's, 32gbs ram, msi titanium, 512gb ssd, 2tb hdd and bunch of pretty leds. Life can resume to being good again.
It may have been overkill, but it'll be my rig for almost a decade I'm sure.

My 4 1/2 year old laptop runs perfectly when it comes to basic tasks like browsing the web, managing and editing files, etc, but it's a bit slow when it comes to more demanding games and, most importantly, the hard drive is incredibly tiny (only 128 GB). I'd also like to do stuff with AI, but that requires dedicated GPUs to run. Should I upgrade?

My bedroom PC is just an old Core 2 Quad machine modded with a 771 2.5GHz Xeon. Got an ASUS STRIX 750Ti GPU in it, 7x HDD's + 1x 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD, XFX XTR 850W PSU, Gigabyte P45 mobo, Noctua CPU cooler, 8GB of 800MHz 5-5-5-18 DDR2 all in a Fractal Design R4 case with all fan spaces occupied (mostly with Noctua fans). This is my most reliable "built like a tank" machine. It is my Linux box and use it for watching TV shows, the occasional movie, documentaries, and other things, as well as web browsing, FB use and music and is also a bit of a file server. I have a nice 35" monitor for it and a set of KRK studio speakers. I see no need for any future upgrades anytime soon for what I use it for.

My 'gaming' PC is now getting pretty old. It's using an old 2600K CPU in a Z68 ASUS mobo, with a Gigabyte G1 GTX 960 2GB, 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, Corsair HX850W PSU, 4.5TB worth of HDD's, ASUS Essence STX II soundcard, 16GB of 1866MHz G.Skill ARES RAM, basic cooler I'm replacing soon to a new Noctua all in a NZXT H440 case. This is connected to my expensive stereo system and 50" TV. Next upgrade will be the GPU (again).

I was on the verge of getting a new computer, decided to upgrade to SSD and was amazed at the difference. used to go and get a coffee while Windoze loads, now it's almost instantaneous.

Fragmentation is not cos your files are spread around, fragmentation occurs when you delete a file and then create a new file that's larger. The computer puts part of the file is put in the space left by the deleted file, adds a pointer on the end and sticks the rest of the file somewhere else on the drive. The more you delete and create files the more the space on your drive gets broken up and files end up in multiple blocks on the disc making retrieval slower and slower.
