Lipedema does not store liquid. If it has liquid it's a lymphedema. Also her visual exam shows an asymmetric swelling. Lipedema is symmetric and affects the proximal (closer to the core) more than the distal (farther from the core) parts. Lipedema does not affect feet and ankles.
Lymphedema is when fluid builds up mostly in your legs, due to a high filtration rate and/or a low absorbation rate.
Lipedema is when you have too many fat cells and they keep multiplying by themselves. Symptoms are usually: Your skin where the lipedema affects you has a higher sensitivity to pain and hematoma, you get exhausted sooner, you gain weight even without chances in diet or physical activity and a diet won't make a change. if it affects your arms they get tired quickly when lifted above your head.
It is a chronic condition, BUT it can be treated. Things that help are compression (like she is wearing), lymphdrainage plus compression, exercise while wearing compression, aqua jogging because it creates compression.
Also surgery is an option to remove excessive fat cells.
If you have lipedema you are also more likely to develop lymphedema because of the changes in your venous system.

Yes, it is not the nicest thing to have.
No, she does not have lipedema.

yep my mum has lymphoedema in her right arm. constantly has to be extremely careful that she doesn’t get cut because any lesion could turn into an infection and her body just wouldn’t be able to combat it

My brother has had this since birth(K.T. Weber Syndrome) . He is now 50 and quite possibly the most loving and kind person ever.

He should read more. There are treatments for lymphoedema. And a cure may be possible yet it can also be controlled.

I know better than to expect an answer but I ask just on the chance I get lucky.

In 2012 I went through one of the most stressful times in my life. I had two daughters, I was the primary care giver for my mom who’d received a dual pathology diagnosis of primary brain cancer, I was also a full time college student. My dad went to work to be able to pay the bills, and I did everything else as far as house care, cooking, laundry, yard work etc.

I started developing pitting edema in my legs. Within 4-6 weeks, I had accumulated about 125 pounds in fluid. I didn’t have insurance so I had to go to the er. I was put on diuretics that did nothing but make me pee a lot. Then fluid started forming from calves. By August of 2012 when my mom lost her battle, I had become so swollen the skin on my legs was as delicate as a wet bible page. My feet were so swollen I literally couldn’t find shoes to fit. I was mortified to attend my moms funeral in goddamn slippers!

No one could figure out what was going on. After another year or so, I had multiple leg wounds. My abdomen had been so swollen. I formed multiple hernias to the extend the surgeon couldn’t repair them via a laparoscopy and had to open me up.

Eventually the majority of swelling dissipates but it will flare. When I’m not swollen, I look like a walking scrotum if an 80 year old man.

Recently I realized another hernia had formed just to the left of my C-section scar. I don’t understand what causes all of this. The sporadic nature. The speed it develops and how it seemingly just goes away.

My mom has this in both legs. If you don't get treatment, which is squish the legs to help loosen the fluid. It will harden the legs and be more painful

My mom has it because of the liver transplant she had back in 2000. The meds she takes causes her to gain a substantial amount of weight.

After the SHOTS I got this. Devastating when my doc told me there is no cure but he had better bedside manner than this YT doc. It can be very painful because of the pressure alone and life revolves around how bad I'm swelling.

there is technicaly special massages done by a proffesional to help reduce the amount of fluids, special tall socks and it depends what is the root problem causing the edema...
