Lymphedema, also known as lymphoedema and lymphatic edema, is a condition of localized swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.[2] The lymphatic system functions as a critical portion of the body's immune system and returns interstitial fluid to the bloodstream. Lymphedema is most frequently a complication of cancer treatment or parasitic infections, but it can also be seen in a number of genetic disorders. Though incurable and progressive, a number of treatments can improve symptoms. Tissues with lymphedema are at high risk of infection because the lymphatic system has been compromised.[3]

While there is no cure, treatment may improve outcomes.[2] This commonly include compression therapy, good skin care, exercise, and manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), which together is known as combined decongestive therapy.[2] Diuretics are not useful.[2] Surgery is generally only used in those who are not improved with other measures.[2]

I am 84 years old, a life-long heart patient, and have been diagnosed with stage 1 lymphedema, apparently resulting from having both knee joints replaced some years ago. My right foot, ankle and lower leg swells considerable more than my left. Sleeping with legs raised higher than my heart reduces swelling considerably. I just completed a physical therapy/education program and have been fitted with a velcro wrap device intended to control further swelling when worn continuously. Compression socks and surgery were not considered appropriate for my condition. I have been encouraged to do specific exercises, ride my exercise bike, and walk as much as I am able to. I've been told that there is currently no cure for lymphedema.

My was different and complex case, when I came back from America after 2 weeks holiday in 2014. My left leg/ankle started to swell and my doctor and I thought it was DVT, we kept our eyes on it. My doctor sent me for x-ray and stay in the hospital overnight. After many investigations, my doctor diagnosed that a tree branch hit my left leg and I didn’t get it treated, that is how I got lymphoedema on my left leg, now I wearing compression socks to reduce swelling.

I think 2:38 should have said and read as Stage Stage 2! Am I correct in this?

I have late stage or stage 3 in both legs, I am getting lumps under my skin on left extremity now so im worried. I am on ssd and my ted hose help and elevation doesn't do much for me now. it's painful too but I have neuropathy so that helps me to not have as much pain. its a joke and im tired of it but its my life now. I have never had cancer treatment, just tumors cut out off of me. no radiation either. I got it from sitting all the time while homeless although I had it for many years stage 1 and don't know how I got it.
