Congestive heart failure, kidney failure, limit the salt in your diet. Shown is +3 pitting edema. Pretty bad. I was a nurse on my feet for 12 hour shifts. By the end of the shift i had edema, not that severe but pitting. After work, when i would lie down to go to sleep, id have to pee often at first-with your legs up now the heart can pump more efficiently and the blood gets through the kidneys and id pee that excess fluid out. Ankles and legs were not swollen when first get up.

It can also be due to lymphedema, which is caused by your lymphatic system either being compromised or damaged. Mine kicked in after a very bad, almost fatal, round of cellulitis back in 2013. And once you have it, it doesn't really ever go away. There are some procedures to help drain some of the fuller lymph nodes, to help lessen the edema, give the lymphatic system a chance to get things moving, however it's not always a permanent "fix". There is a life of compression garments, pumps to help keep fluids moving and try to keep edema down.... you are suppose to try and stay active however when you are carrying around excess fluid - NOT FAT!!! - it is difficult to get moving. I have 2 sizeable lymphatic "masses" on the inside of each knee, making it almost impossible to walk. I use a walker around the house, wheelchair when we are out and about or going to an appointment or whatever. It also messes with your balance (I have fallen, trying to get back on the couch - had to call the fire department to help). And while sometimes the therapy - manual lymph drainage (MLD) - is covered by insurance, many times its not, and neither are the supplies, and none of that stuff is cheap. (Most of the time the compression garments have to be customized, to fit your body, and when we tried to price what mine would cost, back in 2014, one set for my legs - I have body wide lymphedema! - would be more than $700 ... just for the compression socks, none of the other needed supplies were included.) When you first start the therapy you go 5x/week, for about 3-4 weeks, depending on the severity. I/We couldn't afford all that so, over time, I was able to find a couple of YT videos that showed how to do MLD, and we have done it and it seems to help. Diagnosis for lymphedema is woefully low and often missed by doctors as many are only given a 1 hour course on the lymphatic system within their 4+ years of school/training (barring those who actually specialize in the immune system, . with the lymphatic system as a specialty). So many people go around undiagnosed thinking they are "just fat", when it is very far from the truth.

Again, though .... edema is NOT FAT. It is fluid. However someone on the outside sees the person, thinks they are fat/obese (etc) and say "lose weight, go on a diet, lessen your salt, etc" and It is NONE of that, and diets and restrictions will NOT make a difference. (Oddly enough, I have discovered personally, via trial and error, that my lymphedema "seems" to have a reaction to high fructose corn syrup - if I have too much, more edema is retained.) Exercise can help a little IF you can do them. Keeping up with water can help a little bit. For me, who doesn't use a lot of salt to begin with, decreasing the little bit of salt I DID/DO use hasn't made much of a difference. And you don't want to use water tablets as it removes the fluid from the lymph nodes making the fluid kind of thick and sludgy, making it more difficult to move around the lymphatic system and eventually be removed from the body as waste.

May I also say/add, that some patients who have lymphedema find they are also dealing with lipedema, which is a common yet lesser known condition that primarily impacts women and often is misdiagnosed as obesity and lymphedema. Lipedema is a chronic condition that causes abnormal fat and tissue buildup under the skin, usually in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. It's more common in women and can be triggered by hormonal changes, such as during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Lipedema is different from obesity and doesn't respond to diet and exercise. As with lymphedema, lipedema is very often either misdiagnosed or just missed completely, with patients getting the "you just need to try harder, eat less, exercise more" as standard answers and going for years not knowing what is truly happening with their bodies. Social bullying and stigmatizing of "fat" people doesn't help.

Just wanting to clarify this point that the video clip missed.

What is pitting edema? Pitting edema occurs when excess fluid builds up in the body, causing swelling; when pressure is applied to the swollen area, a “pit”, or indentation, will remain. Although it can affect any part of the body, pitting edema usually occurs in legs, feet, and ankles

This is also just fluid build up and it is extra water in your body. Not necessarily what he alleges

It’s mainly due to poor inner cellular hydration…supplement with corse Celtic salt by putting grains of salt under your tongue…it’s due to deficiencies…I get this and it goes away when I stay up on my mineral levels. FYI it’s always a toxicity or deficiency issue in the body…ALWAYS

I had a friend with terminal cancer. I would massage her elephant legs and they would feel mushy. I had to put a towel below because so much fluid would seep from them. It made me cry.

I had this after a bicycle accident. I am fully recovered but am left with permanent bruises on my legs.

Actually in the original tiktok he already said what that was. It was a injury due to a motorcycle biking accident and it was simple swelling. He also called out the so called doctor that misdiagnosed him over the internet. Its not edema at all.

You should've explained that it's water retention. A lot of these comments are very confused about what causes this. I call it play doe leg
