When I was a child I would sit on my mother's lap. I asked her if I would get to big to sit on her lap, no she said. I still remember that.

*"As hard as it is to fathom, even the parents who abuse their kids, love their kids; they just don't know how else to love them, because they're acting out their own childhood programming."*

That is heavy, truth often is.

As a teacher, I always see a child who has an ‘oppositional defiant’ condition as a child who is acting out his buried anger and frustration to triggers they experience in the classroom or with other children. For them, this is a ‘safer’ place to let these emotions go. I try to make time to sit quietly with the child to process and validate their feelings and help them find positive solutions to any problem (usually being able to listen and talk with the other).
Listening to Gabor Maté, I now see that I became a teacher to be loved by children because I did not feel attached to my own parents, who loved me but didn’t know what I needed.

Dr. Mate has been called the "Saint of Vancouver"; his retirement from practicing medicine, while a huge loss for Vancouver, is truly a blessing to the rest of the world. Thank you Dr. Mate, and thank you Niroga Institute for sharing this with the world!

"how do you compensate for not being wanted, by being needed" I've always done this by being a people pleaser.. I was abused as a child, mentally physically and sexually.. I agree mindfulness (to use the term in general) has been the only thing that's helped really. I've been on 5 medications at various times since 13. I haven't taken anything in 3 years and the fog has finally lifted.

How brave of Dr. Gabor Maté to share his own abandonment memories with us. It's his sublime emphatic connectivity to humanity, that motivates me to overcome my fear and strengthens my own healing journey.

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my YouTube channel 10 months ago about self development. Now I have 1, 969 subs and > 2k hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
