This scene hits so hard every time I watch it. Anakin was born as a slave to Watto, then as a slave to the Jedi, then as a slave to Palpatine. Only when he died was he freed. He thought he turned to the Dark Side for the right cause, but was manipulated. In the Kenobi series, he was pure evil. Killing the villagers, torturing Obi-Wan, choking Reva. But in that line he gives Obi-Wan, “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker” his eyes turn blue for a little while. As if he’s forgiving his old master. But his eyes turn orange again, and he says “I did” with a smile. You can see he’s conflicted. That’s why he lost to Obi-Wan. With Reva, it was easy. He had no connection to her, she wasn’t a part of his life or anything. But with Obi-Wan, he was his mentor, his brother in arms, his friend for 14 years. And in Rebels, he was soft for Ahsoka, too. His apprentice, his sister in arms, and his friend. And here with Luke, he doesn’t want to kill him. He’s softened ever since he learned he had a son. And only Luke was able to forgive him. That’s why Vader’s helmet was fully removed. Obi-Wan and Ahsoka both removed a half of the helmet with force. Obi-Wan the left side, Ahsoka the right. But Luke removed the whole helmet, thanks to his love for his father. The mask that Vader wears is a symbol of fear and death. But inside, he’s a broken, depressed man who misses his wife. Luke brought him back. He brought back Anakin.

Padme’s last words: “There’s good in him.”
Anakin’s last words: “You were right.”

Fun fact: During this scene in Lego Star Wars, the Skywalker Saga, the subtitles will actually change from "Darth Vader:" to "Anakin Skywalker:". Words cannot describe how much I love this small change

Palpatine's grave mistake was thinking there was only one Jedi in the room.

There were two.

I like how were both one of the first and last words of Darth Vader.

"Just once, let me look on you with my own eyes." One of the most powerful lines in the saga.

Born as Anakin Skywalker. Died as Anakin Skywalker. He's an example that we can redeem our goodness no matter what.

And this is why the movie is called “The Return of the Jedi”
It’s not about Luke returning from Dagobah, now as a full-fledged Jedi. It’s this most critical plot point in the entire saga when Vader returns to the light side of the Force, and once again, becomes Anakin Skywalker. A Jedi, once again.

My dad would constantly tell me growing up how he saw these in the theatres and that everyone screamed, clapped and cheered when Vader saved Luke. I get goosebumps from this, I can't even imagine what it was like on opening night.

Anakin became Vader because he was desperate for the power to save the ones he loved. He couldn’t save his mother or his wife. Here he finally realizes he can save his loved ones and decides he won’t let palpatine control him anymore. In this scene he’s finally free.

The one thing that really sells this for me is when Luke takes Vaders' mask off and sees his face for the first time, he doesn't look at him with fear or sadness or pity. He sees his father and his eyes light up. It's the unconditional love from a son. Beautiful.

Lucas said that Vader was able to kill Palpatine so easily because Palpatine had become an epitome of darkness. He was so consumed by the dark side that all he could feel was anger, hate, fear, etc., and he had mastered these emotions. Lucas said if Vader had attempted to kill Palpatine out of anger, greed or lust for power, Palpatine would have known it instantly. However Vader's actions weren't motivated by any of those; it was motivated by love for his son, and love was an emotion Palpatine had no understanding of. Therefore, because he acted out of love, he was able to take Palpatine by surprise and kill him before he knew what was going on.

Amazing writing!

As a kid, this made me realize what a father's love was.

The most moving scene is Darth Vader smiling like a normal and kind father who loves his son more than anything in the galaxy.

When you think about it, Vader was born out of Anakin's deep desire to be strong enough to save those he loved. This scene isn't just Anakin's redemption. It's also Vader fulfilling his true purpose.

That last smile Vader gives Luke as he fades away, always makes me tear up.

Greatest redemption in cinema either die a villain or you live long enough to see yourself become a hero".

Anakin has the saddest backstory. Anakin was a slave his whole life. From birth, to the Jedi Order, and the Sith. If it wasn’t for Luke, Anakin wouldn’t have died free. But thanks to Luke, Anakin broke free from the shackles, keeping him from being free. Not only did he die free, he saved his loved ones, like he was promised.

Anakin’s story is the only story that tells you “Power can corrupt people, no matter how good they are, and turn them evil. But, even the most evil villains can turn good. All it takes is one person to believe, and see the light within.”

What a backstory.

I loved Vader's line "Nothing can stop that now" He was so obsessed with evading death and in his last moments he finally accepts it.

"You already have" and "You were right"
The feels when know the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, of how he lived his entire life as a slave. He was a slave as a kid, he was a slave to the Jedi, slave to the emperor, to the dark side. This is the only time he was actually free. The story of Anakin is one of the best story written.
