Considering Luke had a green lightsaber I imagine Vader/Anakin felt a great deal of pride as it likey reminded him of Qui-Gon. To see that his son was on a path that focused on a deeper connection with the force likely brought him a feeling of hope he hadn't felt since the news of Padme's pregnancy.

This scene is what made me appreciate Vader's mask. His expressions can often be read. He looked like a proud father for a moment when he saw the Consular lightsaber. Later he looked like he was in pain when Luke said that his father was truly dead.

You can sense the conflict in Vaders voice when he says "It is to late for me son"
James Earl Jones did a good job on giving that dramatic emotional effect

I love how he says "I see you have constructed a new lightsaber" as if Luke didn't serially take however many hours to build one. Because the sass is strong in this family, I'm surprised Luke didn't say something like "Yeah. Well some dingus asshole cut off the hand that was holding my last one"

In this scene for the 1st time you see Vader as vulnerable. Not so much physically in the force, although Luke was strong enough in the force he could go toe to toe against Vader and probably beat him. But you see Vader as emotionally vulnerable when Luke reaches out to him. It's like he is starting to have second thoughts about his life choices and regrets about how he lived his life. Despite everything Vader did, Luke's compassion towards his broken father clearly rattled him and you see Anakin Skywalker struggling to break away from the dark side and come back to the good side.

This is my favorite scene of the Skywalker Saga! When you look at Vader‘s suit closely you even can see red lights flickering on the control panel when he looks outside the window after Luke is taken by the storm troopers. Makes me kinda think that his electronics indicate him, something is wrong…

I never drew the comparison to the last time Anakin saw Palpatine fry someone he cared about ("What have I done?"). He no doubt relived that moment over and over in regret and realized there was no way he'd make the same mistake again.

It might be me but I think that palpatine coming back in the new trilogy really took away darth vaders sacrifice I felt that he destroyed the dark side by killing palpatine

I noticed in this scene that it wasn’r even you’re a fool I want to continue to serve the emperor. It was more I need to and it’s too late for me said almost sadly. Like the dark sidw was an addiction he doubted he could ever break free from.
