If you have sustained any type of injury, you have experienced inflammation. The swelling, pain, warmth, and stiffness are not fun. However, inflammation is incredibly important. Without it, we would not be able to survive. However, like many things in life there is a balance. If we have too much of it, then we have pain, disability, and it can cause damage to other tissues. As orthopedic surgeons we try to limit bad affects of inflammation, while harnessing the good. At times, it is a hard balance to strike.

Loved this. Very informative. I had a lower bent tenth rib as a result of a date that injured me back in 2010. I shouldn't have gone out with the person, but I was being dumb.

How do you feel about RICE? Rest, ice, compression and elevation. Is it better to withstand the inflammation if it's bearable for healing purposes or should you ice either way? Given that healing is the top priority, not returning to daily activities
