Algebra 2: Be Careful When Taking it in 10th grade

As your children continue their education, the level of difficulty in each class naturally rises. Whether your child fully understands math or has difficulty with the material, both have the potential to crash and burn in Algebra 2. Why is Algebra 2 such a difficult class for so many students? On this video, Dr. Feenix Pan discusses several ways you can help your children prepare for Algebra 2 so they don’t struggle in the future.
Algebra 2 is a heavier class, building upon what was taught in Geometry and Algebra 1. It’s expected that a student knows the basics without having to relearn Algebra 1 from scratch. Brush up on Algebra 1 before enrolling in Algebra 2 at least one month before the class begins. By doing this, you are brushing up on the fundamentals of Algebra so that your child has a refreshed understanding of the basic formulas that carry over.
Hiring a math tutor that has a focus in Algebra is another option that will benefit any child who might be struggling. Whether going over past lessons or introducing new concepts, tutors have the ability to focus the lesson solely on your child’s needs so they can fully grasp the material.
If possible, taking an extra-curricular class in Algebra 2 over the summer is a big benefit to your child’s future education. There are many resources you can utilize for free online or you can inquire with your local community college. While most kids would resist the idea of taking extra school over the summer, by enrolling in a college level Algebra class your child will have an advanced understanding of what’s to come when they return to school in the fall.

Advanced mathematics like Algebra 2 can be scary, but with Dr. Feenix Pan’s advice, you’ll be able to give your child a great start in a difficult class.

I just started Algebra 2 and wow. There is a huge difference in difficulty between Algebra 1 and 2. Algebra 1 during the first week we went over simple equations but algebra 2 from the start we are doing parabolas and quadratics.

Took algebra 1 and geometry 7th and 8th, barely even had to try. Now taking honors algebra 2 as a freshman I’m getting an average of C. All I’m making is small mistakes but there’s so many. I’m probably going to get a tutor next semester. But due to everything being so easy in middle school, I never had to ask for help and now I’m not sure how. So this tutor idea is freaking me out. I call that gifted kid burn out. Not excited one bit.

Thank you, Math Doc. Likely taking both geometry and algebra 2 the same year and it seems to me the best course of action is self-study.

My experience (late 70s) is 10th grade Geometry, 11th grade Trig, and 12th grade Calculus. My opinion from teaching (2006-2018) and tutoring (2018-current) is that Algebra 1 & Algebra 2 should be taken consecutively. It's not a matter of when the Algebra 2 is taken with respect to grade level BUT it should be taken immediately after Algebra 1. Also, Algebra 2 is nearly a quarter to a semester of Algebra 1 repeat/review before becoming more complex.

I took it in 8th grade and if I could get good grades as an 8th grader in that class, so could a 10th grader.

Good information. Are you familiar with a course called Math Models and applications? Some 10th graders take it instead of Algebra II then take Algebra II in 11th grade.
