I love how many hardest questions there are on the SAT. When I took it, these kinds of things were the easier ones.

Multiply the left side by x/x to make x^10/xy=5, 555. Then substitute x^10 with 5 to make 5/xy=5555. Dividing both sides by 5 makes 1/xy=1111.

I haven’t studied math in over 30 years. I love these problems because it feels like rebooting my brain

It is so annoying to see india ( and other parts of asia) have hundreds of commenters thinking their countries are so special because they find this question easy. I am english, and I’m pretty sure this is easy for most people with a decent education. It may simply reflect specifically the USA having a problem with education.

You could take the five out of 5555 to make 5(1111) then substitute the five with x^10 to get x^9/y=x^10(1111) then divide both sides by x^10 and simplify to get 1/xy=1111

This was so much easier than I expected. I thought it was gonna be some trick question LOL

Hey Asians. The point of the sat is to test students on basic geometry through precalculus. It’s not supposed to be difficult math. It’s supposed to be fairly simple problems that require a bit of convoluted thinking

There's no way this is close to the hardest question on the SAT.
Sounds like im showong off, but it took me about 3 - 5 seconds.

Okay yeah I did it but a bit differently
So divide x^9/y by x^10. This gives you x^9/yx^10 which can be cancelled down to 1/xy. Then since we divided those we can also divide 5555 by 5 which gives us 1111
This probably seems quite confusing as you’re reading it like this, but if you wrote it out it’d make a lot of sense

I'm sooo annoyed by other commenters saying "Ohhh I'm from Asia so this is very easy for me, I studied it when I was straight out of my mother's womb!" Bruh nobody cares lol, I'm Asian and I'm having a hard time. Math is not for everyone and it's okay to accept that. I don't see anyone saying "Oh Law is easy" or "Being a doctor is easy" because EACH and EVERYONE has their own talents.

If this is hard question then level of SAT has to be increased 😅

Another approach:
x⁹/y=5555
x⁹/y=1111(5)
But x¹⁰=5
x⁹/y=1111×x¹⁰
Hence 1/xy=1111
