Thanks. Good info. I do think that the fasting is more helpful to those of us with insulin resistance and extreme inflammation, in that keeping the feeding periods restricted limits the amount of insulin we are producing throughout the day. I know that several have cited the fact that autophagy also ramps up to more effective levels at about 16 hours of fasting. I'm not following intermittent fasting right now, at least not seriously so. I was eating one meal a day and fasting every other day...so 48 hours between meals. I have to say that I felt better when I was doing that. I'm going to head back into that after Thanksgiving, and going with carnivore 'diet' for at least 60 days, probably 90. My goal is to eliminate all plant and dairy, except butter, and then bring items back slowly to see if any of this reduces the insane sinus congestion that has followed me my entire life. I'm also hoping to see an improvement in chronic pain from inflammation. Autophagy is all well and good, but getting rid of inflammation is the hope for me.

Autophagy is our body responding to caloric restriction by cannibalizing our cells. Dr. Fung has written about this and has several lectures here on YouTube. He is well respected within the low-carb high-fat community. Fasting, even for short periods of time like 12 to 16 hours accelerates autophagy (by the way, autocorrect sometimes spews out atomic wedgie when I say that word). The body sends out little tow trucks to pick up cells that are malfunctioning or are close to it and send them to the liver to be broken down into spare parts for new cells. It does not cause the cannibalization of healthy muscles or brain cells. Take cells that might be on their way to becoming cancerous. Some people fast for days and even weeks at a time and tout the effectiveness of increasing the rate of atomic wedgie for healing their bodies. But I would definitely seek professional medical advice before trying something like that. Occasionally, I will fast for several days by having only one meal a day, effectively making it two 23 hour fasts in a row.

Whoa Keith LOOKING GOOD! I'm on board with I.F but all the rules and little details can make it difficult. That is the best advice, don't get hung up on all the big words and break your diet. I.F and stick with keto and watch the magic happen. Thanks for another great video.

But some of us use Keto and intermittent fasting not for weight loss but for the anti aging . To decrease our risk of Alzheimer’s and inflammatory processes . There is so much science to it, I don’t think it’s getting caught up in the small stuff. It is exactly what we are doing it for. That is why autophagy has become the buzzword

Thank you both so much for making this video. I am in the end stages of a 48 hour fast (my first) and needed a little encouragement to continue through. Thoughts of a Wawa Hoagie keep cropping up in my mind. But, thanks to your speaking about autophagy and cell cleaning, I can continue on with the fast. Sorry, Wawa!

Having a lot of gut problems, IF helps me a lot, and I think autophagie play a very important role for that.

I've heard that if you wish to see serious autophagy like when you want to lose loose skin, then you have to fast for at least 72 hours and if you can do some of it dry that's even better for this effect:)
