I don't think I've ever heard of a Hawaiian being called an American actually I mean they are their own proud people which is beautiful within itself .

as someone who lives in hawai’i, thank you for posting this video. it’s really informative of the struggles the locals face. hawai’i is not all that people paint it to be, it’s heavily romanticized. it’s not all beaches and rainbows- but poverty, homelessness, rising costs, and colonization… though i’m not hawaiian, (i’m here for other reasons none of which were by choice) i continue to learn from the people about preserving their sacred culture and its beauty.

“We might be American, but we’re Hawaiian at heart”

I come from a long line of kanaka. My grandfather was the first American. Raised fatherless (killed in a boiler explosion) and in destitution. Fought in WWII. Raised a family. Overcame alcoholism.

He was a staunch American Patriot. He loved his country. You can check him out if you visit the pacific war memorial in Pearl Harbor. His name is Herbert Weatherwax. My hero.

In the Nation of Hawaii (an area on oahu) they make shirts that say "Hawaiian by birth, american by force" I feel like it sorta answers this by itself.

I’m not Hawaiian, but as a local here, it’s very true. People identify so much more with their ethnicities and culture than identifying as American. It’s also a regional pride thing because the mainland is soooo different culturally. Plus, mainlanders often only see us as a vacation spot and never truly respects us or the land.

As a Hawaiian, grew up here, literally all of my friends from the mainland consider me Hawaiian and not American, we will discuss cultural differences and I have found out quite a few things that are common in the other 49 states but not here and because of a lot of examples of that a few of my friends have said I'm not really an American. I wear that as a badge because as an American I wouldn't be able to work the lo'i, teach people about the culture here, and just spread Aloha as best I can, but I thankfully can do that as a Hawaiian.

Lived here for 58 years, ancestors have been here since the 1800's. In the 70's, we were American and I still consider myself American!!

The only time we consider ourselves American is on 4th of July so we have an excuse to pop fireworks 😂

There are so many transplants from different countries calling themselves Hawaiians because they live there or born there, but are not of Hawaiian blood line.
This is what has native Hawaiians teed.
Some of us who are old enough to know that true Hawaiians are not from Asian or Portuguese ancestry.

I am always proud to be American and Hawaii both 😊

The current state government of Hawaii needs to make it mandatory for all of its citizens to be bilingual (Learning both the Native Hawaiian language & English) at all schools.

Plus they need to make all road signs in Hawaii with both native Hawaiian language and English.

I live on Big Island close to Hilo, this is a much different place than what tourists depict Hawaii as. There is a familial presence, community vibes, and chill atmosphere. Extremely abundant in landscape diversity. It can be a struggle to live here because of living costs but we are so rich with having this place to call home. Aloha ke akua ❤️🤙🏾🌺😇

My hot take is that I’m equally proud to be both Native Hawaiian and American.

People in Hawaii will always default to what their ethnic background. Hawaiians are Hawaiian, Samoans are Samoan, Filipinos are Filipinos, etc.
