Is there a city you're thinking of relocating to? ✈

Coming from a native backround, I don't mind tourism. What I do mind is that most of the tourists I meet are still biased with a "I demand respect, but won't give it" attitude.

Thankfully not all are like this. There are people I have met that are quite the opposite.

Another thing that bothers me is not tourism, but the cost of living due to property management, and the government's mishandling of current events. Since Covid started many residents (both foreign and domestic) are forced into poverty due to the high cost of housing, properties only being rented out for a weekly or monthly basis, and homes being owned by people that aren't living in the state of Hawaii. The average 1-bedroom apartment is averaged to $1, 500.00 per month, whereas a 3-bedroom house is around $1, 000.00). Although wages has slowly been on the rise, many folks here still find themselves working 2 jobs in order to even afford housing.

Other than that, I love hearing stories from visitors! Where they're from, how it compares to here, and amazing stories during their visits elsewhere. In fact, there was a couple I had met a few years ago that convinced me to go to Japan, and my wife and i are planning on going sometime next year!

Native Hawaiians are really outspoken about wanting people to stop coming to the islands so I'm glad you decided against it. (And when I say Native, I mean indigenous.)

The condos they are building are actually displacing and making the Indigenous Hawaiian people homeless.

I adored Hawai'i with my whole heart when I visited it 4 years ago. It really is like a dream to me. But I could never permanently live there knowing about how the locals, in particular the Natives, are treated and pushed out of their ancestral homes. The soaring costs of housing there is cruel to the peoples whose bloodlines are truly of the islands. The American government abuses Native people's sacred lands all across their country.

True... I'm in college and I just can't wait to meet my mom on the weekends...btw what did you like more about Hawaii? The fresh fruit and stuffs, the different types of cuisines or the scenery and weather and stuffs like that?

Being a local myself I really appreciate the fact that this video had nothing offensive towards “us” in it. All your reasons for leaving are purely genuine☺️ I hope your stay here wasn’t bad as there are a lot of things going on down here lately. Glad your stay was safe and satisfying, god bless you.

glad you didnt!! because of tourism, native Hawaiians have a really hard time living there because of the living costs that were driven up bc of it!!

Good thinking! Some people move places because of the tours, or the cool places, but they never think that they'll have to live their normally; it's a huge step to relocate, because it's not just "now I can do a bunch of fun things!" It's "I have to change a lot of my old habits or even leave things I love behind" (certain food brands, neighbors, etc).

I respect your decision, and I think all people should consider that it's an actual place, not entertainment; find a place that's actually right for you, not a cool party place

I think a lot of you guys are forgetting Doug's family lives in Hawaii..

I do agree with the arguements of why most people shouldnt move there, but in their case there is a reason.

i will never live in hawaii. i love it and have always dreamed of living there, but i want to keep it for the people who have always lived there and i know they have been having problems with foreigners specifically americans moving in and damaging stuff/taking resources and housing from native + indigenous people :(

As someone who moved away from their grandparents I completely understand how you feel. I miss them so much! I’m hoping that they’ll be able to move up here so I can see them a lot more.

I'd just love to live in a big city. Because of similar reasons to yours: movement, diversity, international variety, culinary experiences... 😋

I'm born and raised here on Oahu and I am very surprised to read these comments. Thank you for being aware of what's going on as this is a huge issue. Oahu has changed so much in my lifetime and it's getting way too expensive here

I visited Hawaii two years ago and I met a soldier and she said she was stationed in Hawaii for 5 years and the hardest part was that her family couldn’t just meet up for dinner or if she was sick someone could come help her. They were almost 12 hours away by plane. She’s from the east coast. She said it took her 2 years to adjust to that. I wouldn’t move anywhere too far from family if it’s your main priority.

please don't move to hawaii! many natives are slowly being pushed out due to the rising costs to live here. many people i know need multiple jobs to support their families. this land belongs to the natives :(

I totally understand that. You have no idea how happy I am when i get to leave the islands! I live in Oahu and it's nice, but I love going on trips where they have some different things! Home is nice for me, but sometimes I just get sick of the same old stuff.

Good advice. For us it was our home town is a real pull. All places have unfamiliar and difficult stuff. We spent years on the Hawaiian Air Pass and spent almost every weekend there. We had already been spending a month a year since 1969. In those days we visited most of the islands. On the airpass we spent weekends in Honolulu and had a fabulous time. We wound up staying in Oakland. We are rooted here, but we are also rooted in Hawaii. With the Pandemic, we really miss being there for all the wonderful things we do there.
