Whats a hard pill too swallow by not having Hugo Weaving come back as Smith is the way he portrays a agent in the Matrix, his voice tone, his manarissims, his facial features are unlike anyone else and they totally suit a villian in the Matrix.Anyone else is just another "Actor" not too say Groff would not do a good job.Hugo Weaving just had a aura, mystery and digital feel too his character.

I believe Groff might be Cypher. How he says “… back to the matrix” in the trailer sounds eerily familiar.

Agent Smith is now Neo's Agent as a movie star, which is what he is referring to when saying "return to the matrix." like most Hollywood agents, he is probably a bad guy.

What if for every neo that chooses trinity over zion, another anomaly is generated; a smith? The machines recognized this and compartmentalize neo and trinity in their own matrix to control this returning smith from infecting the main matrix again?

Jonathan Groff's character is basically villain material as he used to play King George on Hamiliton.


The parallels are indeed on point, and I'm super stoked for this villain's debut.

Maybe he takes the place of Smith. Smith said "its happening just like before..." Smith is a part of the anomaly process, this new program is probably taking Smith's original purpose

Jonathan says: “After all these years, TO BE GOING BACK to the Matrix”... implies to me that he is a copy of Smith that has survived the distruction at the end of Revolutions

Groff plays Neo's boss and Smith but its kind of complicated. The time between Neo's taking the redpill and him waking up is much longer then in the previous movie. One of the characters is a traitor and they are interrupted just after Neo takes the redpill and must go on the run. Neo has to fight the side effects of the redpill which are making him hallucinate like with the mirror in the first movie. The things that happen on the train, hobo merovingian and the fight with the Agent who turns into Groff then Smith to the moment Neo wakes up are not real but hallucinations from Neo's memories. This is why they mimic the previous movies and characters.

He is, indeed, very different. The way he speaks, smiles, moves is completely unlike Smith. Then again, the oracle came back very different in Revolutions.

Smith hated being in a simulation with humans, so much that it drove him mad, so if he were stuck back into the matrix again I can't imagine him being as calm and collected as Groffs character, but who knows.

It's lazy writing to have the same villain keep coming back as the nemesis. Hopefully Lana had something smarter in mind for Weaving.
