Recreating the story :
With his previous avatar destroyed at the end of The Matrix Revolutions, Smith has been resurrected in a real body vessel and reintegrated into the Matrix, having lost his ability to replicate himself, Smith nonetheless has retained all of the memories of his previous incarnation, including his freedom from the system of the Matrix, The Analyst brought Smith back for one purpose: to keep tabs on Neo and ensure that he is unable to leave the Matrix again....

See here’s the thing.

They said HUGO was too old for the part now, but what they could have done was make Hugo the Architect or NPHs character, and Agent Smith was designed in his image, but the Matrix evolved on its own, and created its own sentient agent Smith eliminating his design.

Simple, but explanatory.

This makes a good bit of sense the more I think about it. Smith and Neo understand that they both ultimately want the same thing -- the deconstruction or reconstruction of the Matrix and individual agency. This is why Smith decides to pursue his own path and briefly ally with Neo in the fight against the Analyst. Their goals are aligned. But more than this, they simply can't be complete without each other. Together _they_ are The One. So if Neo starts doubting himself, it would be Smith before any other who would recognize this and be first to put Neo back on the right path. That doesn't mean he wants to be Neo's friend -- just that he'll kick a boot up Neo's arse and get him going again. Resolution is the strongest motivator after all.

I watched the movie one time when it came out and this edit was so good, I thought it was real. I thought I'd forgotten about this scene and for a moment, I began to give the movie more credit than I did originally. That is, until I realized that you are very talented, and this is in fact an edit and the movie did suck. 10/10 my guy!

This is more interesting. They played a bit on the frenemies dynamic but including "okay, we'll see you soon" works better with the numerous escape attempts.

My first reaction to this is that I like the idea of Smith and Thomas Anderson starting off as friends of some kind (which they do end up having in the actual Resurrection film) but having the two original actors makes it feel better.

That said, I agree with other commenters saying that Hugo Weaving has a look akin to the Architect here, especially with the theory of Smith being made in the Architect's image.
