We're not here because we're free. We're here because we're not free. There's no escaping reason. No denying purpose. Because as we both know without purpose, we would not exist."

- 'The Matrix Reloaded', 2003.

I swear, chills ran down my spine when Smith picked up the gun and remembered who he was as he yelled: "Mrrrr.

Smith came back because he possessed Neo at the end of Revolutions. Their codes were already intertwined, because of what Neo did in the first movie, but doubly so after Revolutions.

After multiple viewings, I now read the Smith as trying to wake Neo up the whole time. The first scene, where he does the creepy thing with his mouth, I think he did that on purpose, and everything after that was to help Neo get unplugged, then fully awakened, so he could realize his own goals.

Essentially, he was doing the same thing as Morpheus.

“Anyone could have been you. Whereas I’ve always been anyone.” Sick burn bro.

Best line in the movie. So true and yet so cutting.

I think Smith 3.0 is only an "ally" to Neo in the same way Loki is sometimes an ally of Thor; only when it suits him or when he feels like it. Smith did say "This is where our unlikely alliance comes to and end, " meaning basically "I only helped you because I needed to get to the analyst...so next time we meet we'll be throwing punches again."

As I commented before, Smith 3.0 seems to genuinely enjoy fighting Neo now in the same way The Joker loves fighting Batman. It's a deep-seeded rivalry that's both hostile and "loving" in a sense. It makes me think of how the joke in Lego Batman was that all The Joker wanted was for Batman to call Joker him his "greatest enemy." It seems like that's where Smith is at right now. "I love hating you and I want us to keep fighting forever."

The connection between Merovingian and Smith in Matrix 4 is also worthy of discussion. "This is not over yet. Our sequel franchise spinoff" Merovingian says as he leaves. I feel like new Matrix movies will be made depending on this one's reception.

I think Smith remains the most interesting character in the Matrix series and even more in Matrix 4.

Smith in Matrix 1 was not a normal agent. He already wanted to be set free from the Matrix. He was kind of conscious of himself being a program and was looking to break his chains from mother brain.

When Néo destroyed him at the end of Matrix 1, he apparently reincarnated into a new program similar to a virus, as he replicated and took control of all programs within the Matrix (except the exils?).

And when Néo sacrificed himself at the end of Matrix 3 allowing mother brain to gain access to Smith and destroy him and all programs he infected, he disappeared again.

As he's back in the new Matrix, it means that there is a special bond between Smith and Néo, like 2 extremes which tries to balance the Matrix.

Néo wants to change the Matrix, Smith is there to protect the Matrix. Both are intelligent programs, like AI and Machine Learning programs that ultimately behave on their own, while still serving their initial purpose.

In the way I want to understanding it, Smith in Matrix 4 has the capacity to change the Matrix, as he is more powerful than the Architect/Analyst, but he decides not to do it. He accepts that Néo and Trinity wins and find another path. He decides to hide inside the Matrix.

From my point of view, Smith represents rich and powerful people, who are intelligent enough to understand the system and its flaws. He's taking advantage of the system, doesn't want to change it, but doesn't want to be controlled by it (like in some kind of communist system for example). So he lives his life hidden. Powerful but discrete, pulling the strings when he wants to. He doesn't care about others, only about himself.

Néo and Trinity wants to change the Matrix and free people from a system that enslave for productivity.

The question is : What's best?

Im wondering if the reason Smith is seemingly less evil and antagonistic, is because he spent decades being around each other and seemingly became kinda friends. So even though Smith has reawakened, he still has had many years to get to know Neo. And kind of likes him now. 20 years of getting to know Neo wouldnt suddenly vanish just because he got his memories back.

Some interviews say that the only reason that we got a new Agent Smith actor was because there was conflict with Hugo Weaving's filming schedule. They probably still would have used the new actor to show his new modified Digital Self Image (DSI), but then Hugo Weaving would be revealed as the real version just as Neo had his DSI changed.

Smith was never a bad guy. He simply wanted to get free, he was tired of the matrix and his job in it. That's why Smith was thankful to Neo that a part of him imprinted onto him and he was able to escape and do with the matrix as he pleased. In the end, he always needed Neo and Neo needed him

The ending would have been 1000% more satisfying if it was Hugo Weaving’s Mr The pay off would have been monumental.

-Neo blocks Smith's punch, holds it in place, stares at him
Neo: Hmm, downgrades.

This all explains why her name is Trinity. She is one part of three parts of the anomaly.

This channel has done an excellent job at giving me a new appreciation for Resurrections.

I find that so many negative reviews just shows that the audience weren't ready to look at this movie beyond its surface. The easy route was to simply criticise the movie.

i think the idea that new matrix that feeds on energy from NEO and Trinities despair is a metaphor to how social media today keeps us perpetually dissatisfied and keeps are hooked on it at the same time.

overall, a lot of new hidden messages in this movie that needs to be decoded.

Neo and Trinity purpose in this Matrix is not give power to the Matrix, well, in a lesser stent it is, they are still batteries after all, but to keep this version of the Matrix stable, Neo still have the source code after all, and this new Matrix cant function without the source code, as the Analyst says, this Matrix doesn't run anymore by equations and logic, but by irrationality and fiction, humans not want reality, they create their little bubble of fiction, not matter how dangerous, crazy or unhinged it is, if it serves the status quo, the Machines doesn't care, like the Analyst says, they are as happy as pork in the mud, since he is in charge the Matrix have been breaking records of productivity, the Analyst is basically like a CEO bragging about the records of profit meanwhile literally sucking the life of his employees.

I think that whiile Neo has some of Smith in him, the opposite is also true. He struck me a bit of a Vegeta like personna. Rotten, evil, then progressively changed through contact with the Z's and Goku. Same could happen to Smith, I think. From enemy to relucant ally to friend to family.

Also, the reason Neo blew up at the end of revolutions is because he was connected to the mainframe - and thus connected smith back to the mainframe, reinstating the anamoly code back into the matrix - causing syatem reset

Smith, as a carrier of the anomaly code had to be in the matrix and could not be deleted

Just want to say that your videos are spot on awesome in terms of explaining The Trilogy and understanding + dissecting Ressurections. In a way that most others seem to dismiss or just flat out don't understand (maybe they haven't watched it as many times as us). I love the characters including Smith and am happy to see him back. I think Ressurections hits the nail on the head with how today's society operates (and warns us of the future once again). It was a great love story + some deep hidden meanings.

This channel is truly something special.

I feel like in 5 (maybe 6) we’ll see a new nemesis emerge that is the enemy of both Neo/Trinity and Smith.
