Today, let’s talk about the real cause of breathing problems like sleep apnea and snoring.

It seems like we have a lot more problems with things like crooked teeth and sleep apnea in our modern world versus ancient times. Why is this?

Could it be a lack of chewing? Or could it be a lack of nutrition? I think it’s both.

If you have a nutritional deficiency, the structure of your bones may not fully develop. But, if you never chew, you also don’t activate the muscles around your face to make the bones structurally sound.

I believe the real cause behind breathing problems is that our mouths have become too small. If there isn’t enough space for our teeth to grow, they will be crooked. If the mouth is smaller, the airway passages will also be smaller, which will constrict a person’s breathing.

It’s crucial that kids stop consuming refined foods and start consuming foods that force them to chew more. But, as an adult, you can do things to make a change to your facial structure, which can lead to better breathing.

What you can do:
1. Breath through your nose
2. Chew your food longer
3. Consume fat-soluble vitamins
4. Stop consuming processed foods
5. Consume trace minerals

My personal observation with my husband who started snoring within the last 10 or so years ( I also suspect sleep apnea). Every time his weight drops the snoring and sinus issues resolve. When he gains over a certain threshold the symptoms start again.

I nearly died from Covid pneumonia in January. I didn’t know at the time that I had undiagnosed sleep apnia. That was the underlying condition that put me at risk. I snored for years, but never thought it was more than just an annoyance. I would wake up multiple times at night, attributing it to a poor mattress, pillow, enlarged prostate. After my sleep study I now have a cpap machine and the difference is incredible. II sleep through the night (forced to breathe through my nose) and finally getting that restorative deep sleep. I look back and see just how much of my life was stolen due to sleep apnea. Fatigue, afternoon naps, etc. What a difference now. If you snore GET A SLEEP STUDY DONE! I can change your life.

Not used to naturally breathing in and out of nose, try a little tape to close lips together, don't panic breathe, start with a minute or so till it becomes more natural, can also sleep with it on while retraining breathing. It's done wonders for me, I can relax doing hard work again by breathing correctly.

Wow! I am now realizing what I did wrong as a mom! As a child I had 4 teeth removed and then braces. Grew up on casseroles, pasta dishes and cold cereal before school every morning. Both of my parents worked so my brothers and I would also come home and eat ramen and other junk! We all had braces and dental issues. INTERESTINGLY my husband who grew up with a mom at home....No junk cereal....real breakfast and meat and potato with vegetables supper never had teeth issues! We have 8 children and realized in 2019 that we were eating all wrong with lots of allergies weight problems. We did WHOLE 30 found the allergies and several lost lots of weight. Our older 6 all need braces BUT the 2 younger whose diets were changed have straighter teeth!!
At 52 years old I use a mouth guard when I sleep because of teeth grinding😢 My husband has a c pap machine but has been steadily losing weight!😊 Thank you for this information Dr. Berg! I have actually experienced a lot of what you are talking about and am going to implement your suggestions!

Can vouch for this. I read James Nestor's book a year or two ago. I've had 8 teeth pulled, braces, and TMJ in the past. I'd wake up at least 2-3 times each night with dry mouth, and had to wear nasal strips to help breath. I switched 100% to nose breathing during the day, especially during exercise, and after a few weeks, my nose/airways regained their strength. I then added sleeping with a piece of tape on my lips to ensure only nose breathing. It's a world of difference. I rarely wake up anymore and have reduced my sleep needed from 9-10 hours to 7-8.

In our culture (India) we are taught to chew every bite of food 32 times! Now I understand the logic behind it.
Our elders often say chew each bite of your food 32 times.

This way you dont need to eat 7-8cups of veggies but can manage the chewing exercise just by chewing food enough number of times

I have been on a Keto diet a year and a half. I always consume a HUGE chunk of raw cabbage every day now. Chewing through that takes a lot of effort but I have become accustomed to it and I believe what Dr . Berg says on this matter. I have had sinus issues nearly my whole life until now, All that vit c complex in cabbage has to help too right!

1. Got that book and read it last year. I concur with your opinion. Glad I got it. I got Nestor's book and Wim Hof's book at the same time. I read them both and learned sooo much that I wish I had learned as a teen.
2. I quit snoring _completely_ as a _side-effect_, of all things, when I went full carnivore for 6 months. I was having digestive problems, as millions of people have, and went full carnivore as an elimination diet.
( _and then began following your KETO / IF diet at the 6 month mark, slowly introducing some vegetables one at a time, starting with cabbage._ ) After week 3 of being on the strict carnivore diet I stopped snoring. I mean at ALL. It was like someone hit a switch. ZERO snoring. My wife had been listening at me snore for 30 years and the sudden silence at night was unsettling for her. She kept checking me to see if I was breathing. It took her a week to get use to sleeping in silence. That elimination diet cured a LOT of things I did not expect, but it also completed its purpose which was a reset of my system.

Hi Dr. Berg, I am a dentist, a holistic dentist and a naturopathic medical doctor. Your comments are correct there is one or two things that I would add or have you be cautious with. So all the nutrition bit is good for the breathing part especially in adults that already have restricted airway. You need to be careful about only prescribing breathing exercises. They are helpful and of course we need to breathe, but when the airways are restricted, you have to think of negative pressure, which means when people are breathing in and the airways are restricted and flask, they will tend to collapse more little bit like a vacuum tube. That doesn’t have the spring reinforcement when you turn a vacuum on and you block the tip it’ll create a negative pressure and that closes the airway which causes, sleep apnea Apne advance, choking events. The other important thing to note is that although developing the muscles very important you can actually develop the structure the bones you can therefore put the shape of the airway back to the size it’s supposed to be to live leave enough room for the tongue to move away from the airway and open it up great video Dr. Nguyen.

Please, Dr. Berg, May I put my two cents in?
I am English born in food rationing post WW2 era and ignorance of value of nutrients... My Mum gave all the food to my dad because he was working.
I was second child- and I believe, I had subsequently many birth defects- whatever- so much so that I wonder how I survived at all.
I have suffered my entire life
Unable to think exhausted, confused ... etc...I had my oral pharynx measured - braces for a second time- mandibular advancement. My oral pharynx is 8mm where normal (I’m told is 18 mm roughly)
I struggle to breathe through me nose-
Ok get to the point:
I believe 99% of today’s problems /oral - esophageal is because babies are bottle fed.
My dentist says I was bottle fed, my mother said different. But I think she may have breast fed me somewhat- but not for long. I imagine if she’s giving all the food to my dad, she’s got a toddler- she probably didn’t feed me very long- not long enough!
I have spent thousands $ on dentistry & have learned subsequently... the baby sucking hard for milk strengths the dental arch- which corresponds to the lower mandibular-& consequently to the oral pharynx.
My mouth is so narrow that where the tongue should rest on the upper pallet, my tongue cannot even get into the upper pallet!!!
My teeth came in so bucked
That I could not even close my mouth. My words could not form. I could not function.
So, bottom line- I believe all this starts at birth. (Baby teeth formed in utero- adult teeth formed between birth to age 5.
I am 73 now with very little teeth - spo2 drops to 72%/26 apnea’s a hour! I would love to have good salads - but how?
What a mess. Please would you teach good nutrition to younger people —-& BREAST FEEDING (500 advantages to breast feeding but
Bottle feeding is just not worth it. -
I taught breast feeding in my obstetrics etc ( still teach today if anybody interested.
If you care about your baby - BREAST FEED.
BREAT FEEDING STARTS IN PREGNANCY to avoid issues when baby born.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents!
Correct me if you find I’m wrong in anything.
Thanks for listening

I’ve been doing mainly a carnivore diet for 2 years now (Ketovore occasionally) and I’ve noticed that my face (jaw mainly) has changed a lot. I used to have a big gap in my incisors… and used to snore as well… not anymore. I always thought all the extra chewing I was doing may be the cause. My jaw is also more squared. This video is on to something!

I don’t know about this one. I think it goes beyond just diet. I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea at 48 and now know that I had it since I was at least 4yrs old and I have always been thin and health. I do of course believe overweight issues are to blame with most snoring and obstructive apnea but this is due to the soft palate and neck growing in size. The soft palate is a harder issue to correct and in most cases it cannot be fixed, even with surgery and weight loss. A good diet will keep most people thinner and therefore not susceptible to obstructive apnea.

For a devaited spetum nasal strips makea huge difference! Beend tired for more than a decade only to find out my devaited spetum was the cause. I wasn't sleeping properly because I wasn't breathing properly. I recommend the nasla strips, cheap way to solve the problem or find out if that's that cause in the first place or not

I've been chewing mastic gum once a day for about 30 minutes.
I think it's a good way to get chewing in given our modern soft diet.
