V.O. Complete. Stoicism: a philosophy of life. Massimo Pigliucci, Doctor of Philosophy

"One of the reasons for the return of stoic philosophy is that it helps you focus on what you can control, which helps reduce stress and makes you feel that your life has some meaning," reflects Massimo Pigliucci, PhD in Genetics, Evolutionary Biology and Philosophy. He encountered stoicism at a critical moment in his life, when he was going through a divorce and the death of his father. He sought answers from ancient philosophers and discovered the so-called "ethics of virtue", an approach to life that proposes the improvement of the human being through the development of values.

I encountered stoicism about 2 years ago at the age of 29 and It definitely has changed my perspective on life. I was a christian for about 15 years of my life and to be honest stoic philosophy has helped me a lot more than religion ever has. I am not knockin on religion but yea stoicism is wisdom at its finest and has helped an ignorant man like myself see things clearer. I live here in Mexico and no one I know has any idea what it is and im like wtf why not lol

I think Massimo Pigliucci is probably the greatest teacher of Stoicism out there. To me he is the 'real' thing. Great interview!

Stoicism must be learned since the beginning... at school. It´ll be a good way to discover alternatives, in order to handle daily situations in our lives.

Epicteto diria a los frustrados que no tienen subtitulos en castellano: "No sufrais por aquello que no podeis controlar. Aprended ingles, sobre eso si que teneis control".

Who is this lovely intelligent woman? Excellent interviewer, her questions are spot on and she doesn’t interrupt the answers with her own stuff. Top notch!

Stoicism, has such applications even today, although it's origins go back over 2, 000 years. A philosophy that has us ask, how can we live a better life, how can we be better humans, seems just right for todays times. It also focuses on us, and what we can do personally, which is what we have complete control over, and yet the philosophy encourages us as global citizens, and that we are social animals who should be striving to improve not just for us, but for how all of society can benefit from our personal development. Bravo Massimo!

“I was not particularly overwhelmed by the death of my father, my divorce and a change o jobs”??? Man, you were already a stoic before you knew it. I’d be pretty devastated by such trilogy.

I think I´ve been approaching life as an estoic "unconsciously", when I am dealing with something painful or passing through difficult moments I just look up to the sky and I remember that there is a universe outside with billions and billions of stars, planets, galaxies, etc, etc. then having that idea on my mind I just come to terms and accept that my problems are not of a big deal.

It's a great interview, excellent interviewer and interviewee.
One thing I have a gripe about is the claim, which comes off as an attempt to legitimize stoicism (an attempt that is not needed), by claiming that since Aquinas did X then Christianity adopted it. Aquinas is a post schism erudite, so the fact that in Judaism and Orthodox Christianity (based on Judaism) these principles existed regardless of stoicism shoots this down.

I suppose many of you have read some of his books... where should I start to read him?
"How to Be a Stoic", "The Stoic Guide to a Happy Life", or "A Handbook for New Stoics" ?

I like how at 14:50 Massimo is explaining how crazy these times we're living in are. Little did he know that in just two months from the release of this video we'd be in the beginning of a global pandemic that changes the direction of history
