And that is true strength. Not feeling anything at all removes the need for strength, but feeling emotions fully while still not getting swayed by them is where strength of character lies.

It's important that people realize this. Too many people think stoicism equals being stoic. To have total numbness to emotions. Not letting them affect you at all. And since thats respected in a way, so many guys suppress emotions because of it. Even though if you really look at stoicism. stoicism is not avoiding emotion and become a robot. It's processing them logically in healthier ways.

Edit:since so many cant read comments clarifying it up and jusr decide to be mean. Tldr; Im differentiating being a true follower of stoicism and the adverb of being stoic. Being a stoic and being or acting stoic is different. And thinking that being or acting stoic(adverb) equals being a follower of stoicism is a damaging oversimplification. Since people just try to emulate appearing and acting stoic. Which leads to avoiding and suppressing feelings. Hope that helps.

Stoic philosophy is great, but too often I see it hijacked and perverted by tech bros and hustle influencer types who don't understand true stoicism at all. They just pick and choose quotes that fit their worldview and reduce it to a "life hack." That's a big reason why people are wary when you start talking about Stoicism in 2023.

Stoicism is the power to choose which emotions take lead on your life. Negative feelings don't change anything, and you embrace the good feelings to make yourself happier

Well said. Its not that they are totally unaffected by emotions, good or bad( although someone may look less affected from the outside) but really processing things internally without losing control to emotions.

I’m kinda trying to do that with expectations, I’ve noticed the huge difference between how I react when I’m focusing on what I can currently do vs focusing on what ‘needs’ to be done next, and if the goal is detaching from emotions affecting you it makes sense that attaching to an outcome at all makes that difficult, I just set myself up for failure before I even get to the emotion.

The difficulty I’m having is trying not to see it as detaching from caring or trying, and catching my mind wandering into the future while performing a task. When I’m just focused on what I’m doing I don’t seem to get upset for long, easy to let go, like when you’re just playing a boss for fun dying doesn’t make me rage but the moment you see the health is close to gone you start thinking about finishing the fight and not only start doing worse but then failing makes you pissed, even when earlier dying randomly was a laugh.

Been following Stoicism for a good amount of time now, absolutely changed my life. Just absorbing any stoic ideas will change your mindset if you’re open to it, I’d recommend anyone give it a chance!

i was very reactionary when i was younger, so when i’m able to actually take a moment to breathe when the first thing i want to do is fire back makes me proud! slow and steady progress :)

Thank you for the lesson, I've been finding myself telling myself to stay with the feeling, to feel it with no judgement. Rather than being wound up in the feeling, I just let it go. It is not putting up a barrier so I don't feel it, it's feeling it and letting go, learning what I need. Right now I am musing on being wound up by a feeling and being wounded - that second arrow.

That arrow analogy is really good, helps understand the core idea

Holy shit. I am having a moment over here. I was always called stoic as a child and I’d always hated the term. Hearing it reframed like that…

I wouldn't call myself a stoic but that perfectly describes my attitude towards life. Not how I am but what I aspire to be.

You can't control what happens but
You can control how you respond.
So there is never any need to get worked up about things you can't control.

Bruh. I grew up taking anywhere between 5-8 arrows every time something bad happened to me or whenever I made a mistake.
The initial arrow, arrow from myself, arrow from my dad, and then several arrows from my mom. Not even exaggerating

Wow that's a powerful definition, thank you!

I was broken off from religion at a young age and have been unable to find a belief in it in my adult life. I felt lost without some kind of guidance in life but stoicism truly made me feel like I could find purpose and strive for something even if I didn’t believe in an afterlife. I believe stoicism could benefit so many people who feel lost and can’t find a way out of the dark
