Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv G Cylinder Deactivation for Better Fuel Economy

preview_player
Показать описание
in 2018, Mazda added additional technology of cylinder deactivation to its SkyActiv G line of engines. This technology is standard on all Mazda CX-5 vehicles and most of every other Mazda using the SkyActiv G 2.5L. This is a seamless technology that will work behind the scenes to improve fuel economy and save money.

I've included some chapter times:
1:20 How it works
3:08 On road demonstration
10:26 On road demonstration with cruise control
13:48 Additional Fuel Statistics

The best use of cylinder deactivation is with cruise control. The computer-controlled throttle is much more efficient at taking advantage of the light load situations and coasting on two cylinders.

Please comment below any questions. Thanks for watching.

Never had any issues at 110000 miles and still going strong. Yes, I use 100% synthetic oil and still running new. I still get 40mpg with cylinder deactivation on the highway.

It's extremely annoying, me being a mazda fan and planning on purchasing a cx5 in the near future, that cylinder deactivation is standard on ALL trim levels for the 18-20 years. If I had enough money to buy a brand new 2021 I would, but part of the reason I love mazda is because they and toyota have EXCPLICITLY avoided some of these dumbass new technologies like tiny engines with turbos/ direct injection (oil dilution problems eg honda and gmc), cvt transmissions, etc. They are about quality and reliability, but this REALLY shakes my confidence in their engineering. It just seems like a ticking time bomb, and for what, and extra 1 mpg? Cmon man

Mazda is delivering my CX-5 Carbon Turbo (Red interior) this week. I'm very excited.

I have this technology on my 2019 Mazda 3. Had an issue with it for over a year. When it would go into two cylinders at 80-100 kmh it would vibrate the whole car and create a low rumbling sound. There was a fix recently released with updated radiator mounts and software which has pretty much resolved the issue

I took the turbo engine option to avoid Cylinder Deactivation. There are easy ways to clean the intakes with a spray, so the turbo doesn't scare me at all.

Well this helps explain the impressive gas mileage I got coming home from Atlanta yesterday. 35.8 mpg on a 5 hour drive

I need absolute engine reliability for 200K plus miles. Turbo w/o CD or non turbo with?

Cracked cylinder heads are popping up more frequently on these motors with CD. My '18 is going to the dealer in a few days for repair. Starts with burning smell and mild smoke. Mine has oil all over the exhast side of the engine

The cylinder deactivation is only useful on highway when driving moderate speed. In and around town, it´s always more useful to shift into the next higher gear to have lower revs.

Is there any way to deactivate this "feature"? I have only read horror stories about cylinder deactivation and with the new 2021 models coming out with this "feature" missing completely, doesn't really instill any sort of confidence with this technology.

It should have been something that you could disable. It causes problems with vibration and jolting in certain circumstances.

I absolutely hate this system on my brand new Mazda 6 20th Anniversary. Whenever the system switches modes, there's a noticeable shudder which ruins a lot of the driving experience for me.

I am therefore looking for ways to have it deactivated without making the ECU throw a DTC.

Has Mazda addressed the cylinder deactivation issues that were in the 2018-2019 CX5? Out of the 2.5NA and the 2.5T, which do you think is more reliable long term? Thanks!

But does it only deactivate cylinders 1 and 4? It seems to me an unwise choice, ford has the deactivation on all cylinders of the 3 ecoboost and deactivates a different one each time to have a degree of use of the piston sky homogeneous among all.

Is it possible to disable the cylinder deactivation? Because it will destroy the engine as shut off cylinders will be cooler and won't reach the correct tolerances, therefore they gonna wear out much faster and result in serious oil burning and loss of compression.

Does the 2.0 L CX-5 have cylinder deactivation ?

drove a 2019 cx5 today. I was looking for the screen that shows the fuel economy monitor but mine only shows bars that go up and down as you drive. Im in Canada so maybe the lcd is not programmed to show the car with cylinders as it does in your video.

Hi Jonathan
Thank you for your clear demonstration of the cylinder’s deactivation.
Do you notice rpm changes from activation status to deactivation status? Is it significant?
My CX5 doesn’t have your screen showing cylinders up/down status...
Many thanks.
