A Master Automobile Technician reviews the updated 2022 Mazda CX-5 to find out if the recent facelift improved things.

So Should you buy a Mazda CX-5? Mazda has always been an innovative company that made very interesting and good cars. That is until Ford took hold of things and Mazda struggled. But that rough friendship ended and Mazda quickly bounced back to their roots of good engineering and interesting cars.

The Mazda CX-5 has a lot to offer. In this video we will start with some key technical highlights in the engine, transmission and AWD systems.

Then we'll move to the exterior and interior which has always been sleek and sharp. Even better with the facelift in 2022.

We'll take the CX-5 on a test drive to see how quiet it is and how well that 6 speed transmission shifts.

And of course no car is completely perfect, I go over somethings that I didn't particularly like about it.

I own a Mazda 626 Sedan in Prestige Silver Metallic colour, 1990 model (fully imported from Japan) ... bought brand new in Melbourne, Australia as a gift from my father for my 18th birthday. He paid $32, 000 Australian dollars for it back then! It's now 32 years old, has done 500, 000 kilometres (310, 000 miles) and l continue to drive it daily. Has never failed me. Unbelievable car. I cannot part with it. My first and so far, only car ...!! It still looks like new and has always been outside for its entire 32 years, so far.
People cant believe it!

Six weeks ago, l purchased the 2022 Mazda 3, also fully imported from Japan. I am expected to take delivery of it at the end of July.

I am keeping my 1990 Mazda 626 (the love of my life!) and will never part with it and intend to drive both cars!

Love and warm regards from Melbourne, Australia.

You are actually a good reviewer. The fact that you include technical details makes you a complete and qualified reviewer to me.

Excellent review that helped me decide to go with 2024 Mazda CX-5 versus HR-V, Corolla Cross, or Subaru. I do not want CVT or turbo, not at all. Thank you, very much!

Lifelong Toyota fan. Was looking at getting a Camry, but their laziness in getting production/output to the customer made me look elsewhere. So, test drove, fell in love with, and bought a CX-5 last week-but not the turbo. Dealership was very eager to come off the price and add some incentives, So far, very happy with my new car, and the standard options are really high end. The only difference is MPG. I'm getting 25 city and 35 highway, but still too early to tell. But for $6K less than the Camry, I'll be able to pay for for gas for years to come, and break even. Thanks for the review.

Their 'soul red' paint colour is one the best shades of red ever.

I own a 2016 CX-5 AWD that just celebrated hitting 100, 000 miles. This is the most reliable, smooth-driving vehicle I have ever driven in. Even after so many miles, the engine is sooo quiet that I don't even feel it when I stop at a light. The transmission is also very smooth and is barely felt when switching gears. The seats and the overall interior feels luxurious and very spacious. Never had any issues with the car, just basic maintenance such as 5k mile oil and filter changes, serpentine and water pump belts replaced, and a transmission fluid changed at 80k miles. Just recently replaced the brakes and flushed the brake fluid, and doing the coolant replacement soon. Absolutely the best purchase I have ever made. Here is to another 100k miles!

In my case, I prefer the rotary dial over the touchscreen. Why? I hate seeing smudges, plain and simple. 😄

I have a 2018. Pretty low mileage because of Covid. I love it. Nice interior, lots of safety features. I love the heads-up display. Would buy another in a heartbeat.

I disagree about the infotainment. Both my wife and I love the fact that it's not a touchscreen. We use Android Auto so maybe Carplay is worse with the dial but it's very easy to get used to.

After fighting with fidgety and hard to hit little touch screen settings/controls. I much prefer the dial for the infotainment. The CX5 is definitely on my list for future consideration. Very nice.

My 2018 Toyota Highlander with only 57K mileage on it got burned because of block heater components issue. That’s when I looked around and considered everything to replace my beloved car. Until I came across the CX-5. I never considered Mazda on my shopping list nor test drive their cars until that one Saturday morning when I a stumbled a Kuro 2022 Black Metallic Mica with black alloy gloss trim caught my attention that I decided to test. Truly it was amazing and remarkable. Everything on this review furthers enhanced my belief of Mazda engineering. Now with almost two months driving it compensated my three years of thoughtful experienced I had with my Highlander. I can’t be more prouder with my 2022 CX-5 Mazda it’s super simple genius engineering classy and fun to drive. I loved it in every way. Good job Mazda and a lot of room to improve so to speak with AMD’s minor recommendations. Nice review too. Thanks a lot.

I simply love your content. So many so called specialists make 30-44 minutes about a vehicle and spend 5-7 minutes to film the car and speak about buttons or things like. If I search information I want to know the bad, the ugly and should I buy this car. Should I chose this car for the next 10 years and 300.000 miles. You are doing a really really good job! 👍👍👍👍👍

There's 4 or 5 car review sites that I regularly check out. They all have their own angles and dangles and unique ways of reviewing. I like yours because you uncover hidden things that make cars work. In this case you point out engine components that make the 2.5 Skyactiv engine unique and special. Same with the transmission. Also, you commented about the driving position and what the driver sees when behind the wheel. Most don't do that. Thanks, well done!

I don't like the newer gen 2's, but I have a 2014 CX-5 with over 116k miles on it now, and I still love this car. By modern standards, there are a lot of things missing sure, but in terms of just a car that works and is fun to drive, it ticks all the boxes for me and has been extremely reliable.

I have a white 2018 CX-5 and I love it. Not one single mechanical problem all these years and it rides so smooth, handles very precise compared to the Nissan Rogue which I had before and rode like a freight train. Everything is where it should be and everything works the way I like. Resale value on used CX-5 is through the roof right now, I would definitely buy another one.

I've got a 2015 CX-5 Grand Touring with over 200, 000 miles (mostly highway) and it's been an amazing vehicle for me.

I never had a car with auto stop and it’s a god sent, full stop just take foot off the brake the car holds no more keeping foot on the brake during long stop light, then just gas to go. Also rotary control is superior to touch screen, keep eyes on the road and intuitive after few days I you don’t even have to look down. Long time Toyota and Honda owner but impressed with my 2021 cx5 so many thoughtful engineering.
