Why you shouldn't follow your passion

You've lived your life thinking that you need to “follow your passion”. Stop it NOW!

I don’t follow my passion, my passion follows me. I stay disciplined and the discipline reveals what I'm passionate about. Discipline equals passion. I can choose, just like you can, just like the credo says, the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.

Which one are you going to choose?

I'm 26 and I've been wandering around in life trying everything. I talked to my dad a few days ago and asked him how to figure out what to do with my life and he laughed. My dad was successful, enjoyed his job and made good money so I wanted to know how to find that as well. He's said he still doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up. He said stop looking for an awesome career and just pick something because if you work hard and get good at your job your job responsibilities get a lot more fun no matter what career you're in.

I follow the "pain of discipline".  Once you reach a certain point the unconscious mind makes being discipline the natural way of being.  In the beginning it's hard (and painful) because the brain is forming new pathways, once those discipline pathways are set, it's smooth sailing - you can accomplish anything you want.

Passion is myth, finally there's people out there thinking what I'm thinking about.

Ouch Mr @Bo Eason, This is such an eye opener. Earlier I was out paying the cost of success and I honestly told myself. I can't wait till I "make it". But I realize success isn't a destination and pain it a part of life. Just depends on which pain you choose to allow in your life. Thanks BO!

Thank you Bo for sharing your thoughts in a profound way...that one's passion comes alive only through discipline.

Very good. Just found this channel. Gotta hear more from this guy. I'm wondering, though, how just having fun and being spontaneous fits in.

I'm not sure why discipline has to equate to pain....I feel pride and dignity when doing something that requires discipline....And when it's complete i feel satisfaction.

you follow opportunity and bring passion with you. Mike Rowe said this in the early 2000s with his dirty jobs show

I have a lot of respect for Bo but in this case passion is a must to endeavor harsh times. Of course disciplin is very important attribute but as Steve Jobs said, a rational person would quit when it becomes to difficult and therefore passion is required to work long hours. I think the mind works best when you enjoy doing things and everything that contradict those feelings will make you less productive and creative. And in todays competitive society those characteristics is needed to succeed and if you don´t have them then a person who posses them will win.

Following your passion is not about luxury or ease. To have a passion is to have something that you would relentlessly persist in doing even when faced with punishing agony. In college, I regularly felt stressed and pushed to the limit, but what kept me going to succeed was the knowledge that I loved my major and there was nowhere I'd rather be than slogging it out there. I tend to find that the passion made the discipline less painful. That said, please seek help if the pain begins to interfere with your wellbeing and health.
