Not words to live by; words to make a living by.

that should be everyone's motto.
"First identify the opportunity, Second become good at it, and Lastly learn to love it."

Exactly. Most people are only "passionate" about something because they're passionate about the paycheck.

In reality, they learn how to use their natural talents and employ them in their daily careers. That's how they become good at what they do.

I don’t think there is one set answer for everyone. Everyone has different mindsets, interests, circumstances. Not following your passion works for some people, not everybody. Statistically he could be right, since most businesses end up failing. But if no one were to follow their passions and everyone was just slaving away with work they don’t find any enjoyment in, then we would have no J.K. Rowling, no Steve Jobs, no Michael Jordan, no Hayao Miyazaki, probably no Leonardo Da Vinci, etc.

Passions don't pay the bills. Avoid degrees ending with "Studies".

Get "Think and Grow Rich" and read the chapter on Specialized Knowledge. You find what you are passionate about then find an opportunity in that. You train yourself to take advantage of that opportunity and success is yours. The problem with not following your passion first is that when you do something for the opportunity when the going gets tough, and it will, you don't like what you do well enough to keep going. You will quit.

Well you have to be smart about it. Follow your passion. That's what the gurus say. I'm telling my own subscribers that this is bad advice. I have seen many living in their mid forties with no skills, no resources and no future because they did follow this mantra. Swell Charles, give up on your dreams you say? No. I'm saying to be smart about it. You don't just pick a job that you would do for free and that is usually the arts. Like Stephen King--he could have retired in the 1980s but still writes--because he would write anyway. But most artists don't make the big time. So if you have this burning passion that is in the small percentage of making it, by all means do that---on the side. But keep a day job and that job can be a cousin of what you would do for free. For example, maybe you are an oil paint artist at heart. But your day job is a graphic designer. Or you are that actor. You day job is teaching high school drama--or advance to teach college drama. See? You do the next best thing to "your passion" that pays the bills decently. That's how you negotiate the thing you would do for free where there is risk vs quitting your day job to leap off the cliff not knowing if the water is below. Hope this helps someone---Charles

Follow your passion is the most ignorant privileged concept- try enjoying your dream to be an actor/artist or whatever when hard economic times hit- and your loved ones are hungry and you refuse to help because you selfishly would rather see them struggle than yourself

I agree with the idea of bring your passion with you to work, but I don't agree with to never follow your passion. What about those Nazi soldiers? I'm sure some of them were against killing the Jews. What about those infantrymen in the military killing Afghanistanian children? Should they feel passionate about those things once they experience the slaughter?
You cannot see work and passion as a complete black and white concept.

Right do not follow your passion just like this guy and you will end up just like this guy nowhere why because those who are crazy enough to believe in themselves and follow the "unrealistic" are the ones who change the world
