DRY SOCKET - Infection after tooth extraction: causes and treatment ©

What is a dry socket? Why does it happen ? How long does it last? Which is the treatment? Here we explainthe infection after tooth extraction:

00:00 Introduction:

00:08 Healing after tooth extraction:
After performing a dental extraction, the place on which the roots of the tooth are settled, called the alveolus, is exposed, forming a blood clot on it, thus generating the first stages of healing and protecting the nerve endings of the empty dental socket.

00:21 What does dry socket look like:
Occasionally, this clot may not form due to various factors, or it may disappear due to contamination by food debris or smoking during this healing phase. This produces a process called dry socket. When the nerve endings are exposed, intense pain is generated in the area, which usually appears during the first 3 days after a tooth extraction.

00:48 Dry socket treatment:
The main treatment is symptomatic with pain medication. It is also important to remove food debris by irrigating the area with saline solution. Curetting of the socket may be indicated to decontaminate the bone surface and cause bleeding for a new clot to form.

01:27 Treatment with Plasma Rich in Growth Factors:
Another effective treatment is the placement in the alveolus of plasma rich in growth factors, since it has bacteriostatic properties and favors tissue regeneration. It can also be used preventively, placing it at the time of extraction.

I had one of these. It was terrible. It was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life and I've had numerous broken bones, a case of COVID-19 that I barely survived, and I've been stabbed in the gut. Broken sockets are the worst. FOLLOW YOUR DENTIST'S INSTRUCTIONS!

I had a tooth pulled about a week ago and have been SO paranoid about dry socket 😭 thank you everyone for sharing!

This really is the most unimaginable pain I’ve even been through…those who’ve had it before understand but trust me when I tell you to do exactly as the dentist says when you get an extraction

that is why people when the dentist tells you not to eat certain things or do certain things while you are healing from a tooth removal and gives a list of what you should do you should do them. i had to eat nothing but lukewarm soup for a week and a half and it sucked! but my mouth healed up well and i didn't have any complications.

It’s after 3am and I’m on day five of being diagnosed with dry socket. It’s so hard to do anything, to sleep or concentrate when you’re in so much pain. 😣 I did everything by the book but two days after the extraction I started to get pain into my jaw and neck. I went back to the dentist and she cleaned it out and packed it and gave me antibiotics. It felt so much better for a few hours. But I woke up today in so much pain and it’s now radiating into my cheek 😞

Why are these things always so satisfying?

Going through dry socket currently.

I've now had all four wisdom teeth out but second time with Dry Socket.

It's an unbearable constant pain with throbing. It's like my jaw has a strong heartbeat.

I am on Antibiotics for it too and have now developed Oral Thrush. So as you can imagine I'm at my whits end here.

I had a couple of teeth taken out a few days ago. Still feeling some pain and was worried i have dry socket but reading the comments reassures me, as the pain i fell is not that bad and regular paracetamol deals with it. Thanks for sharing stories.

I had two dry sockets. Unimaginable pain: when they gave me those filler things it helped so much. Lost a lot of weight that summer lol

The worst part is the pain. The second worst is the lack of sleep.

I has a wisdom tooth removed and got dry socket. It was the worst week of my life. The pain was worse than anything I have er experienced and I didn't sleep for a week. Even mega painkillers didn't even touch it! It was worse than broken bones by a long way. It's pain beyond pain that is in your head and face there is nothing you can do about it for a whole week. Breathing is scary as every breath you take goes across those nerves and makes it twenty times worse for a split second. Every breath is torture.

50-years ago they told patients to "keep the socket clean" and even handed out flush syringes. Which of course caused dry sockets. Treatment was simply to flush the socket, and pack it with paper stripping soaked in Clove Oil (now called Eugenol). This was done for three days. There was no curettage done. Pain relief was immediate after the first treatment.

It's been 8 days. How I avoided dry socket, this is WHAT I DID:
The injections and extractions didn't hurt, but I felt significant pressure when they pulled them out!!!
The doctor didn't really give me instructions aside from prescribing medication (for pain, swelling and antibiotics)
I kept biting the gauze for 2 hours until I arrived home. Don't speak please!!! just remain silent, FOCUS ON THOSE CLOTS!!!
Went to my bathroom, I took the gauze out very slowly from both sides...
I immediately drank my medication pills but tried to not swallow too hard!!! I was really scared of losing my clots ToT
then cleaned AROUND MY MOUTH with paper towel bc oh boy one side was still bleeding and everything felt a mess inside!!!
DID NOT WASH MY MOUTH WITH WATER OR ANYTHING after that, ONLY PUT NEW, CLEAN, DRY GAUZE TO BITE
(DO NOT INTRODUCE THE GAUZE INSIDE THE HOLES OR ANY DEEP!!! JUST BITE) AND WENT TO SLEEP in a sitting position.
please don't wash, rinse your mouth and don't eat for 1 day!!!! eat beforehand (A LOT, i ate and drank the most I could)
and use mouth wash before the procedure bc your mouth will feel gross the next day!!!
The second day I woke up (I slept for 7 hours maybe), I was not in pain, I took the two gauzes out again and the holes bled a bit.
I drank my medication very slowly with little water.
I did not wash at all but tried to dry my mouth and other teeth and gums with gauze as well except my premolars...
My mouth felt nasty. I was so anxious my clots would fall.
Anyways, the CLOTS were THERE, I was so happy!!! One side was still bleeding a bit though, so I thought I should keep biting a small gauze and don't speak for the rest of the day as well. (Do not bite hard if it's still bleeding a bit, just bite normally with your mouth closed)
The second day I drank soup only and ate mashed potatoes with my tongue basically...
At the end of the 2nd day I drank ensure advance and felt full.
The third day I got up, checked the clots (they were dark red) and just then I felt confident enough to rinse my mouth with salt, IT FELT SO GOOD.
I finally also washed my lower teeth with toothpaste very carefully and my front teeth as well. Do not rinse strongly, just let the water fall from your mouth corner.
End of third day I ate only soups, mashed potatoes, 2-3 ensure advance, nothing solid yet.
The fourth day I finally ate small pieces of chicken (but be careful cuz they get stuck) and since then, I started eating solid food little by little and rinsed with salt after eating my meals.
I did not eat rice until the 7th day, it keeps getting stuck!!!
And that's how I survived premolars extractions!!!

Had my wisdom teeth done last Friday and I ended up getting dry socket despite being so careful and following the surgeons instructions. Worst pain I have felt in my life, had to go in and get a dressing for the tooth and it still hurts. Dry socket is no joke, would rather be hit by a car than deal with this pain any longer 😭

This is what happened to me. A dry socket. The pain was worse than when the tooth was in. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. They cleaned it, sucked out all the food and packed it. 3 days after the intervention and the pain is gone.

I was surprised my back started hurting after tooth extraction but found out its referred pain. Similar to how the tooth pain gave me headaches, painful jaw before extraction... extracting can cause such a rush of pain (that you don't feel) but it hurts your back. 😳 hopeful it won't last too long. 7 hours after surgery and i feel no pain in mouth at all.
Just imagine how bad it hurts without any pain killer injection. Respect to ancient ancestors with bad teeth.

I had a tooth removed Wednesday, I follwed the instructions by the book and was so paranoid of dry socket. Its now Sunday at 1 am and I am in the most unimaginable pain. I can barely think, sleep or do anything! I am calling the surgeon first thing in the morning 😢
