It's kind of overwhelming how many of us are here in the comments because our dentist didn't explain anything to us.

I am now on day 8 post extraction with a dry socket and it still hurts. This has honestly been the worst amount of pain I have ever felt in my life, by far. Day 5 and 6 were absolute 10/10 pain wise, I'm convinced I would have ended up in tears at the emergency room if it wasn't for my medication. The pain actually made me light headed. I went back to my dentist and he packed the extraction site with a dry socket paste. That helped only somewhat. My gums are just now slowly starting to close, but I can imagine I have a couple months ahead of me where I have to flush out food from the cavity until it completely heals. Please, listen to your dentists advice. Don't smoke, vape, spit, or drink though a straw. I promise you, it's not worth it.
Edit: 2 weeks of absolute hell. Day 15 was the first day where I didn't need painkillers. I am now on day 16, and while it doesn't exactly hurt, I can still feel a bit of discomfort. My condolences to anyone going though this.

I watched this video three hours before having a tooth extraction. Now, I'm coming back, 1 tooth less, to thank you for this video! ❤️ Your explanation on the healing process helped me so much feel secure about what's bound and supposed to happen, removing any anxiety and worry. I have successfully finished forming my blood clot!

Again, thank you so much for the video; it is a source of assurance. ❤️

After I had the extraction of my first molar on the upper jaw and I was very afraid of anything that comes close to my mouth. I couldn't even speak a lot. My friend told me that that he even started eating the following day so I decided to eat and that was the most stupid thing I ever did in my life. Long story short, today marks exactly a few hours to a week since I had my tooth extracted and I have a dry socket. The pain has been real BAD but slowly going away. I can't believe I will spend Christmas not eating and spending my money on eating pain killers.

Dental hygiene is the most not talked about part of health but after having your tooth removed, you get to know how important it is. Teeth are PRECIOUS.

Let me share mine...

Got my 3 front tooth extracted and I feel okay. The cold compress and meds really helped me after the extraction. The blood clot is present and I didn't spit it nor rinse it with water, I just let it form. Then I only ate soft food like porridge and drink water without disrupting the area.

It's almost 19 hours after my extraction. Praying that it will heal soon.

If you can breath through your mouth with no pain, then you don’t have dry socket :) hope that helps you guys out!

My sister got her teeth out the same day as I did, but she had a really complicated tooth extraction so she sadly got a dry socket. After seeing the pain she was in I waited until three days after my wisdom teeth extraction to even brush my teeth, and even then I did it very gently. yes my mouth was gross, but it was worth it not to have to go through this pain.

For anyone asking do I have a dry socket TRUST me you’d know. I can’t swallow, talk, eat, even breathe properly . I’ve been in severe immense pain crying for the last 4 days.

Love how new bone can grow, but enamel just doesn't care.

Today I have done my first extraction ever and that too in wisdom tooth. Thank you everyone who shared their own experiences. That'll help me a lot. I will share my experience later on in this comment thread. It has been around 3 hours since I have done my extraction and there's no pain yet. Though my left portion of my cheek is swelled and that is kind of scary for now.

a good tip for brushing is to use a mirror to help see exactly where the toothbrush is. i tried to focus on just the top of my teeth the farther back i went as well. take it slow and carefully, only go as far as you're comfortable with so no accidents happen. i never realized how small mouths can be before i had to work around my wisdom teeth wounds

I had a surgical removal of my wisdom tooth, it took me 2 months to heal, and I was struck by a textbook type of Dry Socket. I will never forget the traumatic event

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed last week! My recovery went smoothly and I followed all of the instructions. I have an empty hole on one side of my gum though.. I’m hoping that it’ll heal by the 4 month mark🎉

Yall don't need to be nervous. Its gonna be okay. Coming from a girl who had more than 10 tooth extractions in her life bc she has a unique dental process. I had 4 teeth pulled out a few months ago so it's okay! Just eat soft food. Nothin too cold or hot. Like jello :0 I had my first extraction when I was in 3rd grade so it's really gonna be okay!

very informative. I almost used too many gauze. Letting it breath and heal makes more sense.

Excellent video!! I had my first wisdom tooth extracted a few days ago. I am unsure if I have dry socket, I have some pain, but I have a decently high pain tolerance and have not taken meds. My oral surgeon did not mention anything about not frequently changing pads; I thought changing them frequently would make things better and keep it clean.

I’m getting a tooth extracted tomorrow, I’m scared now 😳. I’m already suffering from a unfixable cavity tooth. Now I have to suffer even more!? I thought that once the tooth that was hurting was removed that I wouldn’t have to experience anymore pain. I guess I’ll have to brace myself for these next uncomfortable weeks, but I know once it heals I won’t have to worry about pain anymore. I hope it doesn’t last more than a week or two.

Just left the dentist for a follow up wisdom tooth extraction. I thought I was doing everything I was supposed to, soft foods, oral rinses, brushing & flossing when I should, no smoking no straws, no exercise, well…

some how I got a dry socket.

It hurt but not as bad as I thought it would.

There would be times I’d start crying mid day due to pain but I thought it was just healing, not excruciating enough to go to ER
(I do have a high pain tolerance)

They put a clove oil pad in my hole and removed the stitch. Feels great now!!
