Blood Clots Are GOOD!? | Dry Sockets Explained

Let's talk about dry sockets, what they are, how to prevent them, and treatment options if you end up getting one!
A “dry socket” (alveolar osteitis) is something that happens after a tooth extraction when your body doesn’t heal properly. As with other wounds, you need a blood clot to fill in the area so that the site can start to heal. If for any reason that clot comes loose, falls out, or doesn’t form at all after a tooth is pulled, it creates a painful condition most people call “dry socket.”

The most common situation where a person will experience dry socket symptoms is when they have their wisdom teeth removed. Since 3rd molar extractions tend to involve some type of oral surgery, the recovery process can take a bit more time. Dry socket in wisdom tooth extractions can be avoided, but it still happens in approximately 2-5% of tooth removal procedures. Some sources say it affects up to 1-in-5 wisdom tooth cases.

I had my wisdom teeth out as a teenager. I was lucky, I didn't experience any of this. I don't remember being told about all this. However, to keep the openings from "drying out", they gave me a plastic syringe with a curved tip to irrigate the 4 openings with salt water. It seemed to work fine.

Im so happy with your video’s and i get why you emphasis following your dentist’s instruction. But i live in The Netherlands and my dentist is great love her, but the medical centre that did the wisdom tooth surgery literally rambled through the aftercare as quickly as she could it felt like a cop that was reading the 5th. And I watched your video before and she didn’t even said anything about straws, resting with an elevated head or swishing motion when rising the mouth. I am so thankful bc you take the time to educate us and you probably help so many people step up their dental health game! Thank you so much. (Also mini rant II: the Netherlands refuses to put people under they numbed me locally and that was fine but then they took out my bottom right tooth and it freaking started hurting even after 4 injections and i told them i was scared for the pain she guarenteed me it wouldnt hut but it did!!!! I could feel pain a medium pain nothing unbearable but it still hurt allot bc i was expecting no pain and i could feel them pulling the tooth out. And I even told them that the normal enestesia for my cavaty didnt work either so they had to double down. They assured me everything wohld be fine bc they do it diffrently but it ended up hurting and i could literally feel my tooth being pulled out with a freaking wrench. Traumatized !!! But the top molar was painless and i am a little pressed because i told them the bottom one was infected.

My thing is why don’t they put the Clove dressing in in the first place. This just makes me associate the Dentist with pain, not relief! Pull painful tooth - possibly more pain! And if there is dry socket, well call ur dentists for an appointment that’s not available for 6 weeks! Well I think I have a mild case of dry socket. At day 5 I started getting cold sensitivity. Day 6 cold and warm sensitivity. I was weening off the pain meds but upped them just in case. I only have discomfort when I drink g something. Never when I eat, even tho that’s cold or tepid too. Very confused. I was never scared of the dentist, but now, I hope to never have to see one again. I know they’re doing the best they can but man! I need a neurologist for all this!

Honestly I’ve been paranoid about getting one . I got my wisdom tooth pulled like 56 hours ago, so I’m paranoid but this video actually helped . I’ve been eating nothing but soup and applesauce, washing out with salt Walter after meals, no smoke, spitting, or drinking through a straw . I do have a blood sort of taste in mouth but my oral surgeon that’s normal as long as my mouth isn’t bleeding and I’m not increasing in pain

I had a tooth extraction. 4 days later i had to go back to the dentist because i was in pain, had a real bad taste in the mouth and could t sleep. Turns out i had an infection. They cleaned out the infection, without anesthetic which was damn painful. Now im on amoxicillin and hopefully on the mend

Sadly I managed to dislodge my clot while sleeping. Was the back molar and when sleeping on that side the minor cheek swelling, empty area, remaining molars and tongue managed to creat suction as my tongue moved in my mouth. Thankfully I was three days into healing before it happened. So now there is some pain and discomfort. A sense of swelling but also a mild feeling of a cold needle bing pushed into the jaw bone. Over the counter pain reload helps a lot, advil and Tylenol combined making it manageable. Just have to really try not to get food in the little pocket and rinse with warm salt water and antiseptic mouthwash. Taking antibiotics as well. Hope this is the one and only tooth I lose for a time!

i got this when i had my wisdom teeth removed (15 years ago) and whitney is not kidding it's the worst smell and taste i've ever experienced in my entire life. genuinely haven't experienced anything so disgusting or terrible in my life and doubt i'll experience something similar.

i ended getting dry socket because my mom made me put black tea sachets on the extraction sites, presumably to stop bleeding??? but if anyone tells you to do this, don't ever do it! it's the worst worst WORST!

1:40 Why would this not be the normal procedure to prevent "dry socket" in the first place?

Just out of habit I drank through a straw about 28 hours after my tooth was pulled. So far so good, seems like it's healing okay. I was stressed and driving my wife nuts asking her to check it every hour haha. Thx for the video.
