Out of all the treasures I've lost over the years I am thankful that my VHS collection of NGE is not one of them. I'm gonna have them buried with me like a Pharoh when I die.

I was like 8 to 9 years old around 1997, when my older brother's anime enthusiast friend gave me a random, self-recorded VHS tape with 5 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion with poor, fan-made subtitles in English, which I was just learning back then. My mom didn't bother to check the contents, she knew it was "cartoons" so I got to watch it in peace despite the not quite child-friendly content. I practically wore the tape out, for years wondering how the story would pan out after those five episodes. I have vivid memories of me sitting in my room, watching the grainy VHS in a similar TV in my room. Sometimes I just put on as background entertainment while I was playing my GameBoy or doing something else. Often drawing my own versions of the "robots" from the show. It wasn't until around 2007 when I finally got to see the full thing. This show was integral to me as a child, and still is, more than 25 years later. As a child, I was never fully aware of what they meant, but the undertones of adolescent depression and rather dark themes spoke to me on a level I couldn't understand until much later. There were certain scenes I played out in my head continuously. Only as an adult did I realize that I was a very depressed child, and those five episodes of NGE were like a lifeline to me. In some ways, they helped me cope with emotions I couldn't understand. Needless to say, when I finally got to see the full show, I did it by myself, in my own apartment. Because I didn't want anyone to see me cry throughout the whole thing. And for reasons I didn't understand even then, I insisted on watching it on an old, small CRT TV.

As someone who grew up just on the end of VHS tvs and box tvs like that this is very nostalgic even tho I wouldn't be watching Evangelion I would be watching Pokémon or whatever my parents/older siblings put on

Now imagine watching this at midnight on a Saturday in the basement or something. There where no lights, no other electronics. It felt like entering another world.
