Trouble syncing this stuff up precisely, but I think it still works.

1:17 I feel the emotion expressed in Storyboard Kensuke’s face on a spiritual level.

This is unbelievably validating though, I always thought my storyboards were just unprofessional and crappy, but seeing the EVANGELION storyboarders were just as loose and simple and all??? My confidence now PHEW

You guys are all making fun of the art, but don't even acknowledge that the purpose of a storyboard is not to "look good" but to be simple and understandable for the animators. The storyboard does its job, and even if the characters are not on model, I'm betting not half of you could draw that storyboard within the set deadline (which is often pretty tight). It requires not just drawing skills but also a good understanding of filmmaking.

I find it hilarious how the whole story board is scuffed as hell but they went through the effort for Rei’s eye to be detailed

9 month later edit 💀: Also unit 01 at 1:07

i'm an animator and i love eva so this is gonna be an eternal reminder that storyboard don't need to look great or complicated to work

I like how rei's eye is the only well-drawn frame in the storyboard.

Funny how the last episodes when they ran out of budget they started using these storyboard-like drawings and still looked cool and worked with the context

There is more going on in the storyboard then just "crappy drawings" camera shots, angled, perspective, lighting, depth, etc, much more goes into the thought process behind the storyboard then just messy drawings, also shinji smiles in both versions, his smile in the finished intro is hella subtle, which I feel holds more meaning then a huge smile.

Storyboards are great because you dont have to spend heaps of time perfecting the art, you just need to communicate the animators what to do

Honestly I’ll always find it impressive how they can go from storyboard to the finished project. It’s beautiful.

As an aspiring storyboard artist, gotta say watching this made me relieved that drawing skill isn't necessarily required for this, yet at the same time bummed out that these days most storyboards can't just be still images anymore and are practically animatics, especially in higher production animation.

0:35 shinji has a little smile in the storyboard version :(

A few things to notice
0:36 Shinji was happier in the storyboard
0:39 in the storyboard though roughly drawn the hand looks like a hand, not like a high heel or something, I've always thought that hand is weird
0:47 Shinji checking out Misato naked in the storyboard: 😏
0:51 2015 vs 2014
1:16 those faces LOL

The best part is you can tell the creator of the storyboard is an actual good artist

Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari’s storyboard designs are so glorious! They must put so much effort into them!

Well, every great achievement starts with a little step.

The anatomy on all of these is surprisingly on point, yeah they're all made in a few seconds but you can tell whoever made them knows exactly what they're doing. It's pretty impressive all things considered
