Most people over/under estimate their calorie intake and do not take the time to actually work out their maintenance level. Consistency is the most difficult part be it diet/training. But this is solid advice.

It depends on your body fat.
If you're 20% bodyfat you're not going to bulk lol
The "surplus" will be your body fat.
If you're 10% bodyfat then yeah. Bulking is needed

From My experience This advice doesnt apply to me. From the information I got everyone was on the bulking train. I ended gaining weight most of it being fat even tho my surplus calories was not more than 400...I lost a lot of months which I will never get back while enjoying what I see on the mirror if I had tried it on maintenance or better yet on a deficit. If only I watched coach Greg’s video when I started training...Just my opinion and experience

I agree with this. Body uses it to building if use slight surplus. With plain oatmeal etc it is different i believe.

Listen to the BHUD here. He knows and he is right.  I am working with Steve right now to do the same thing.
Yes Coach Greg says you can do it. And maybe you can for some period or in some limited way. I'll specifically say that I need some amount of surplus and Steve established that. I had been in a cut and the workouts were holding most of the muscle and maybe adding some small amounts of muscle. But the plateau comes where you are working hard and adding grams of muscle and Greg knows this and other trainers do too. But the push is to keep it lean. As you advance you know you can cut a few pounds while holding most of that muscle.

Look Ive been Following Greg’s advice and it has helped me drop over 115 lbs in the last 10 months. But obviously this makes sense.

Hi Steve! That's a great advice and I'm sure it will help a lot of people understand that a body needs fuel to push hard & progressively overload the muscles and I have experienced this myself. My question to you is that in your opinion, is it fine to add 15-20 mins of low intensity cardio post weight training to keep the extra fat gain in check & if the scale is quite stagnant or going up very slowly (1pound every couple months) but I am progressively becoming stronger & adding reps, am I still adding muscle? Will the cardio hinder the muscle building process?

Thoughts on SPOTO press for hypertrophy/strength?

In my experience, if I hit my protein goal the calories are generally high enough. So I don't focus much on calories.

Also I would be surprised if this Chanel is big enough for Greg to respond to.

You can absolutely make gains on maintenance calories. It just takes time. And we should all be in this for the long game anyway.

Been at 185 lbs for over a year, down from 205. The weight came off FIRST, before I even hit the gym. I did 45 days of cardio and body weight exercises to shed the weight and get my body ready to lift again after being out for nearly two years.

I've improved up to 50 lbs on most significant lifts/pulls. Bench press has jumped from 185 lbs for a few reps max, to 235 for 7/6/6 in my last session, and I do flat bench as my final movement for the day.

So yeah, you can 100% make SOLID gains in maintenance calories. Not a problem for your body even in the slightest. Effort is all it takes.

I get a little confused with this. If I increase my calories from maintenance, I'm going to inevitably gain some fat. So I will get heavier and my maintenance level will increase. Do I keep increasing my maintenance at that point? Won't that leave me constantly increasing and getting more fat?

when i first started training i trained to have a six pack, then i realised how easy it was to get a six pack then i started training for strength and size. anyone who is afraid of getting fat from bulking is just a beginner who doesnt know how to train properly

That is an extra 100 cal a day to gain 1 pound in a month. 100 calories is not a bulk in my opinion. I feel that what you are describing is not what the question was. From what I understand a bulk is 300 to 500 cal above maintenance. And that will make you fat or at least have to diet down later.

What if you're already overweight?

I've learned especially if you're a skinnier person, you definitely need to be in a higher surplus than most people with more body fat. General rule: once all of your abs go away, you've gone too far. Go a little under that food that you were eating, weigh yourself 2 times a week at least, and train harder than last time. We're all gonna make it

Greg's fangirls commenting that Greg is gonna get on Steve's ass really need to shut up & actually listen to what both are talking abt. Their philosophies are similar, no need for aggressive bulking, the difference is Steve goes for a more realistic approach catered towards his clients.
