Over the years there's been many different ways to get the power to the wheels, I once had a rear wheel drive mower that activated the wheels buy a gear system that would lower down into the notched wheel tread, essentially the wheel itself was a gear. Since this was plastic on plastic it would sometimes make a grinding noise when the drive was engaged.

huh.. this is actually the first time I heard about any F/R/AWD. pretty soon, they'll be installing push button start for these lawn mowers.

The real question is, does one really need a self propelled mower in the first place?

Rear drive is all you need. Unless your yard is on the side of Mount Everest. But not many yards qualify.
Even then your probably to busy with your crampons and ice pick to mow today.
Now a Yard/Ba that mows by its self may sell. Watch out Kitty! MEOOOW.
