AWD also has a transfer case. the difference is lockup. 4wd sends equal power to all 4 wheels. awd has the ability to change power split via brakes or other methods.

4WD = All power to all wheels
AWD = uses all wheels but varies the power distribution

4WD is a locked center. AWD allows differentiation between front and rear drivelines.

Some vehicles can lock and unlock the center. Some have a low-range. Some AWD or 4WD vehicles have TC to vector torque. Some have axle-diff lockers. Some don't. Some AWDs just have a center differential or a viscous coupling.

Modern drivetrains have become incredible. Something like a SelecTrac Rubicon has RWD, 4WD High, AWD, 4Low, torque-vectoring TC, selectable axle-diff lockers, and LSDs. It also has ABS, VSC, great articulation, and front anti-sway bar disconnect.

My 99 5.4 expedition has AWD and 4x4, in a transfer case.

it's the same AWD and 4WD cus it uses the power to all 4 of the wheels.

just difference is, AWD has center differencial, 4WD has the transfer case

4WD can change into FWD & RWD
while AWD can't

4WD can detect if the inside or outside wheel has different speed when taking corner
AWD has the wheel sensor near the front axle to detect whether one or two of the wheels loses speed the system will send a commend to force the engine giving all wheels the same power

that's all I've ever know correct me if anything wrong

AWD more expensive and hope it does not brake or fail, 4WD it can fail and u may not even notice

My grandpa told me that he had to lock his car in Four wheel drive one day and took out the rear driveshaft because it was having problems. So then you have FWD

I still don't understand. you didn't explain anything. you were only blabing.

AWD is always on and doesn't need human intervention to work. *avoids getting stuck

4WD needs a knowledgeable driver to use appropriately and avoid damage. *great at getting unstuck

Lol yeah not exactly. AWD definitely has a transfer case and can use that to change how much power goes to front and back, not the clutches job. Please do some research

I'll take the one that is cheaper to fix. 4 wheel drive sounds like it. AWD sounds like you need a mechanic and a software engineer.

Awd can be driven on the highway all the wheels move at the same speed. 4x4 has a low range, is On/Off, can't be driven on the highway.

This why Subaru AWD is better, no electronics or computer clutch, no transfert case. It’s AWD all the time at any time and any speed
