All wheel drive is great in Canada where we have winter 6 months of the year.

It's easy to go 100 MPH on the snow. It's much harder to stop at 100 MPH on the snow.

Why do I get the feeling Scottys great grandfather was probably a blacksmith arguing against those newfangled horseless carriages.

I live in Minnesota, I will never be without all wheel drive.

Lived in the Midwest my entire life, driven an AWD drive car for the last 12 years. Never EVER gotten stuck, and I’ve driven past at least a hundred people who were stuck in 6-12 inches of snow.

Obviously the type of tires and the tread left makes a difference. But when there’s snow on the ground for 7 months of the year, there’s no substitute for AWD.

Thank you, Scotty, you gave me the Corollavirus...

Take this advice from a Texan with a grain of salt. We don’t need AWD down here but y’all northerners do

Yes, its stupid for a Houstonian to buy an AWD vehicle ... but the rest of America isn't Houston.

I have no idea why Scotty is using a 4WD vehicle to talk about AWD. The two are pretty different.

I understand generally FWD and even RWD will get you where you need to go.

In Wisconsin, the conditions in the winter especially outside the city AWD makes a difference.

Most 2 wheel drive cars do pretty good if you use studded tires in the Winter .
I once lived on a Mountain and the only way I could get up the Road in my 1985 Cutlass, was with Studded tires ( which was rear wheel drive ) .
Most front wheel drives can get through winter if you have enough clearance and good tires .
I live up near Scotty's old neighborhood near Niagara Falls .

So wait, you're going to lump together AWD and 4WD? Those are totally different systems and have totally different purposes. Most AWD systems are set up to send power to any wheels that are slipping or have a loss of traction, which is excellent for most road cars, even in dry conditions. However, 4WD systems often don't have the same "smarts" and sends the same power to all wheels at the same time -- thus why you had the warning NOT to lock the differential on paved surfaces. You never pointed out these differences. I don't know that much about the G wagon (personally I would never buy one), but it looks like it can either run as AWD or 4WD. Most vehicles are one or the other -- not selectable like this.

Also, while AWD cars are heavier and do cost a bit more to maintain, with the newer engine technologies they are pretty fuel efficient as well. I have a Subaru WRX, which is definitely not a economy focused car, that often gets between 29 and 34 MPG running an average of 80-85 MPH. Even the new Toyota Rav4 states the same fuel efficiency either with AWD or 2WD -- so I think fuel efficiency is an old argument. Maintenance, by far would be the biggest negative to AWD systems.

I drive on mountain passes pretty regularly so it's AWD or 4WD for me mate.

The difference between AWD and a fwd model is usually only a 1 mpg difference. I’ll stick with my AWD.

I just got rid of my 2008 mercury mountaineer AWD and replaced it with an FWD Mazda 3 hatchback. Going from $64 a fill up to $26 I love it

Did you mention that with an AWD vehicle you must replace all 4 tires at once (unlike with 2WD where you can replace tires in pairs)?

Yes 4wd does require a little extra maintenance. But I’d rather have 4wd here in NH. I have a mid size pickup. And I much rather a vehicle with 4wd then AWD. 4wd is also cheaper to maintain then AWD. There is a difference between the two
