I had a huge crab pot of boiling water drop on my legs while i was sitting near the pot at an outside bbq and i will never ever forget that pain that made me scream out from the depths of my soul. It was a blood curdling scream that wouldn't stop. I watched my skin on my legs instantly rolled back all the way down my legs while i was sitting in a chair thinking i was in a nightmare and i was driven to a hospital and they applied burn cream all over my legs for months. At the end it healed with zero scars and the drs couldn't believe how i healed. I was extremely lucky so i know kinda what they were feeling there pain had to be 100X more then mine and my pain was off the charts. Being burned alive has got to be the absolute worse way to die. My heart goes out to them.

Jesus😢😢😢😢. What did I just watch?? I work on board a cruise ship & I know what u talking about. The water tight door chopped off 3 fingers of a crew member on my ship last year. He was only 21, 3 months into his first contract and was sent home at the next port. I'm literally shaking and crying right now. We work so damn hard and NO CREW deserve to die thus way 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

This terrible news. Hearing someone scream like that would haunt me for a very long time

Working as a crewmember, i was always scared of those watertight doors. Especially when your room is on the opposite side of one.. 😢

So incredibly awful. These doors are unstoppable forces. When I was with the Navy, there were certain doors with huge stickers labeling the doors MANKILLERs. I know the torpedo rooms had them, and I'm sure there were others, but for some reason those doors just stand out in my memory. The ships with the Navy are, of course, not equipped with stability fins and are super-structure heavy, so the ships heel a lot, particularly in high winds. A heeling ship and a slightly-opened mankiller door combines to crush the unwary or even sever limbs.

The engine compartments are labyrinthine death traps of their own. The stress of a CHENG is nothing I would ever wish for. I greatly prefer commercial cruising to my time with the Navy, but I'm well aware of what happens belowdecks and in the passageways of working ships. Huge respect to the people who do these jobs.

I am soo sorry for those two men. My prayers go out to the their team members, Cruise staff team and all their family and friends. I know those that heard the screaming will hear it in their heads and dreams. May God give these people comfort during this difficult time.

As a former crew member myself, this is a a terrible accident. I was a watertight door person, I got on a person for going through a watertight door, because he would've been crushed.

I am especially sorry for their families, friends, everyone in the engineering department and the entire crew of the ship. The Chief Engineer who is directly responsible for everyone in their department that works in boiler suits in the propulsion department. The Captain or Master of the ship deeply cares for everyone of the members of the crew no matter what department or rank that they hold.

While I understand the general thought that having a way to open those doors while people are still trapped inside. A lot of people forget that a drowning person will drown you if that means they get to live. Not by active conscious thought but only by one's sense of self preservation.

My Dad was a engineer on a merchant ship. He had a boiler rupture near him. He was burned from the waist down, and that was the end of his career..

When my father was in the Navy, he lost two of his buddies to a similar incident. If he had paperwork about it, he'd have a valid PTSD case that could account for his alcoholism, though back in the 60s, that would never have been addressed.

We were there and it was extremely sad.
Crew are like family to each other.

Assuming the steam lines were properly maintained, it can absolutely happen with material defect, or just plain force, steam is incredibly powerful.

As you mentioned it’s obvious that those doors should not be able to be easily circumvented, however I think in light of this tragedy, some sort of lockout procedure needs to be implemented.

Those steam lines can be shut, and locked shut so someone else can’t open the valve if someone were working on them, for example, and I think being able to lock the water tight doors open while performing maintenance is certain spaces, like confined space rules, is a good idea.

Hindsight is 20/20 they say, and all safety rules exist because someone died.

My heart goes out to the family and crew.

It’s worse than burning alive b/c the nerve endings remain functional until time of death. Rest in Peace.
