On my first deployment, we were docking in Rota, Spain. We’ve been at sea for over two weeks and this was the first time we got to go ashore. We were excited as hell, but it was just days of replenishment. No liberty. But as we were docking “BRACE FOR IMPACT” and BOOOOM! We went flying. The ship ran into the dock. I ended up pulling guard duty near the front of the ship. So I’m walking around with my rifle. I can see where we hit. It doesn’t look too bad. About half way through my watch the Capt. comes walking over. I come to attention, salute, and report my station. He says to relax and that he is just here to see how bad he f*cked up his boat. I told him I wasn’t no DC specialist or anything, but it looked ok to me. He replied with, not too bad for running a career over. He walked off. That was the last time I ever seen him. He was relieved of command before we left port. A few months later he was out of the Marines. Ironically it I was standing forcastle watch the day I heard that. The port was in Italy. Some city that makes fireworks on an island in the bay. They had some anniversary going on and had the most intense fireworks display I have ever seen in my life. The Rolling Stones played a concert on the next dock over. Absolutely surreal. I couldn’t see anything, just hear it. It was like the ship was celebrating.
