LPT/Possible Unpopular Opinion:
I remove room gratuities, because I've heard some cruise lines actually pocket a percentage of the tips for their own margins. I prefer to go to the front desk, have them removed, and they will provide you with white envelopes in which to put cash. I personally tip each staff member who was consistently tending to me (FDR staff, room steward, etc), with a little note and a "thank you" in their language. I tip them much more cash than they would have been granted from on board gratuities from my credit card :) and this way I know exactly where it's going! And I try to include something for them personally, like their favorite snacks or candies; I know they send a majority of their money back home to their families.

Tipping culture in the US is disgusting. Companies should pay the staff a respectable salary. They should not be dependent on customer whims. Any tip received should only feel like a nice bonus, not part of salary.

7 Things NOT to do on a Cruise ship

#1: Don't jump overboard

How about a novel concept: because at the end of the day every member of the crew will have done something useful, PAY THEM A GREAT SALARY and don't guilt customers into paying it.

Cruise ship employees are some of the nicest, most selfless, most respectful people i have ever come across.

# 7 is bad advice. ALWAYS remove gratuities.

As an FYI. THE CREW DOES NOT RECEIVE YOUR TIPS! Do your research. The cruise line uses the "gratuity" to supplement salary payments. Example: The crew earns $300 / week from the cruise line. You tip $100 for that week. The cruise line then pays only $200 plus YOUR $100 tip. Crew pay for the week? $300 still. Cash tips are best, but often are placed in the "available bonus" bucket and still split, IF they "earn" the bonus.

If you want to tip, do it in cash. Otherwise, it's going back to the cruise line. There are tons of videos / employees explaining the pay structure. Gratuity is paid to the cruise line, not employees. THAT is the disgusting part.

Pay for an all inclusive cruise. Get surprised with gratuity fees. It's bs.

why don’t staff just get paid by the company? american tipping culture is so ridiculous, it should not be the customer’s responsibility to pay the worker’s wages. that is the business owner’s responsibility

Next time you're on a cruise, ask staff if they get the gratuity. Their answers will suprise you....

There shouldn’t be gratuities - the cruise line makes plenty of money to pay a living wage - their decision not to shouldn’t cost other people their hard earned money. That is entirely on the CEO.

I HATE the way they make the servers at dinner and other crew members dance around like trained monkeys. It's degrading and it's not done well either. You can tell by the looks on their faces that they know it's stop it!!!

No one should never ever tip anyone. That’s the company’s responsibility. They make more than enough money to pay the employees salary.

Number 8: Don't jump overboard just for fun. I've seen someone do that and it disrupted the cruise so much that they were immediately kicked off when we went to the next port.

"Things to NEVER do on a cruise ship"...never...get on a cruise ship. Ever. That's my motto.

Tips on your tab goes to the ship. I take mine off and hand over the cash to the crew members. I know that they will surely get the FULL TIP!!

I love cruises. So much so that I have been on about 15-16. But the one thing better than the ship and it’s destinations is the crew. They work so hard to provide you the best vacation ever, have extremely long shifts, and at the end of the day, smile with a warm heart no matter how tired or exhausted they are. One member stays in touch through Facebook, and it shows you they really do care. Props to them 👏👏👏. Love those guys so much ❤

I took off gratuities.
20% is excessive and the rate I paid already covers gratuity so that's enough, unless someone went beyond their role for me

Remove gratuities because its not my job to pay you after ive already paid. Your boss should pay you, not tips. I only ever add tips/gratuities if they were earnt
