MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE FIRST AND SECOND CANTONESE VIDEOS FIRST:

2. 10 Easy Cantonese Words for Beginners:

NOTE: I am not a native Cantonese speaker (my family has no connection to Cantonese), I am self taught and am definitely not a professional, so if you want professional advice search for the many awesome native speaker creators on youtube :) this is more for casual learners/people who wish to learn Cantonese from Western backgrounds.

Canto vids are back thanks to you guys asking for it! Today we're gonna talk about numbers - they're something I use a lot in ordering food and talking to friends as you need to be able to specify quantities of things quite often. There's also a few special ways to shorten the way you say numbers that are exclusive to Cantonese - so feel free to try these with your Canto speaking friends next time :)

Back with another CANTONESE video! Remember I'm not a native speaker (2 years+ of self learning), so these are all based on my personal experiences in HK and other Cantonese speaking countries with native speakers. Numbers are definitely realllly important so make sure you get to learn them early :)

Watch my other videos about Cantonese before starting with this one:

I watched your other two Cantonese videos and after watching many many MANY Cantonese videos you're one of the only people who have ever explain that the characters are the same (traditional or simplified) they are just pronounced different for different languages. This makes so many other things make so much sense. Like when you go to choose a language on a keyboard or a inside a language learning app, they ask if you want traditional or simplified - and I'm like "do you mean do I want Cantonese or Mandarin???" - this also explains why many Cantonse speakers can understand Mandarin (reading). I can't believe this explanation is left out of so many things.

More specifically about you're videos, I've literally learned way more in you ten words video than I have in like 4 years of casually learning Cantonese from tons of other sources. You taught the basics that I can connect to literally say a million things!

Thanks so much, I really hope you make more videos teaching Cantonese.

One tricky question is the number eight '八' and the unit for hundred '百' sound very similar.
八 is 'baat3' and 百 is 'baak3'. They even have the same tone.
Their only difference is the endings, 't' vs 'k'.
What makes it tricky is native speakers do not pronounce the 't' and 'k' out.
So are these two exactly the same in pronunciation?
Not really.
Even though '八' is pronounced like 'baa(t)3' and '百' like 'baa(k)3',
there's still a subtle difference between them.
Just imagine when you pronounce 'baat' and 'baak' with the t and k sounds,
you'll find that you need to open your mouth bigger for pronouncing 'baak'
because 'k' is a sound pronounced more backward from your mouth.
Therefore, to pronounce '八', open your mouth smaller and narrower;
to pronounce '百', open your mouth bigger and wider.

Cantonese is my mother tongue and I speak so so since I'm living in Europe (and especially since I'm not living with my parents long time ago). Thanks for pointing out those specific shortcuts words like twenty/thirty/forty, I didn't even know they were a thing, I just assumed we count so fast that the spelling changed.

Thanks for sharing these videos. As an ABC, it’s difficult teaching Cantonese to my children especially when I’m only 30-40% fluent. You break it down in segments and that’s been helpful.

🙏 Adam, I like your style, although I found it a bit to fast.
I watched it for the first time, and I still don't have a clue.
I'm wondering if I watch it over and over again whether it will sink in, or could I just be wasting my time🤔
It would be interesting to know others' experiences. For instance should I just continue with watching it over and over again in the hope that I'll be able to understand it better🤔
