I’m very grateful to mathematician Hugh Woodin, Professor of Philosophy and Mathematics at Harvard, for taking the time on multiple occasions to discuss this topic with me and help me wrap my (finite) head around it.

I’m also grateful to David Eisenbud, the Director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) and professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, for his help and for connecting me with Hugh Woodin.

Never discuss infinity with a mathematician, they can go on about it forever.

"Name the biggest number guys, go!"
"a million quadrillion"
"A googleplex"
"A millionilion to the power of 42"
"A powerset of a millionilion to the power of a googleplex to the power of 9"
"That, plus 1"
"OH COME ON-"

This, right here, is my favorite video on YouTube. Without question.
I have re-watched this time and time again, and I wish youtube had a counter for re-watches.

Edit: I wonder, what would happen if we repeated the creation of new notation, creating bigger and bigger countable ordinals.. but forever?
We could then call this new ultra-notation A, and have A-5 where we repeated the creation of new notations 5 times.
What is A-Omega equal to, then? Omega-One? What happens if we make A-Epsilon0? A-A-Omega? A-A-A-A-A-....?
We could then call A-A-A-A... equal to B. We could then have B-2, B-3, B-Omega, B-A, B-B, until B-B-B-B...
We could call this C, and have C-C-C-C-C... then D-D-D-D-D... all the way out to Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z....
and so on and so forth.. but what if we did that same pattern forever again?
Have I surpassed Omega-One yet? Or not?

Why am I so obsessed with watching videos that make my brain dissolve itself

waiting for myself to have a son, then I will wait for my son to say “I love you times infinity” and I pull up with the “I love you times Inaccessible Cardinal”

I’m so simple-minded that I can come back and watch old Vsauce videos and still be absolutely mind boggled as if I’m learning it for the first time

Imagine a number so unfathomably large that infinity doesn't even come close to describing it. Then imagine naming that number almost huge.

This literally, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, chronologically, theoretically, socially, psychologically, metaphorically, and exactly hurt my brain.

I truly admire the man who animated this whole thing. Imagine the literal thousands of numbers he had to animate.

It makes sense that 40 is the biggest number. It's extra large (XL is 40 in Roman Numerals).

I can’t expressed in words how enlightening this video is. When this video came out 5 years ago it literally saved me when I was in a limbo with no particular interests in anything in my first year of highschool. Now I’m in my 3rd year of undergrad majoring in mathematics and it’s not an exaggeration that’s it’s all because of this video. Thank you and I hope that a lot more people will be inspired by you.
