More than half of video creators we survey get a copyright claim at some point during their YouTube journey. So the question is: if I have a copyright claim on a video, can I still apply for the YouTube partner program and monetize my channel even if I do have some copyright claimed content. As always when it comes to copyright on your videos and monetization the answer isn't as simple as yes or no.

I was accepted into the YouTube partner program yesterday! Out of my 71 public videos, 20 of them have copyright claims due to containing songs that were copyrighted. My assumption based on YouTube's wording is that copyright claims matter only if your channel was actually benefitting FROM the copyrighted material, meaning, videos with lots of watch hours on your channel received views directly because of their use of that particular copyright material (perhaps a video that did well because it used a popular song, things like that), as opposed to simply using it in the background of your unrelated video. Does that make sense? Based on my experience, having a whole 20 copyright claimed videos didn't affect my channel from becoming monetized, and hopefully it won't affect yours either! Hope this helps someone :)

Great video as usual! I just got the approval to be monetized e-mail this morning 5\12\21 and I must admit, I had been waiting since last Wednesday, 5\5 to hear back. I had 4 or 5 videos on my channel that had snips of copyright music in them. After I watched your video, I went in and started clearing the music up by replacing the songs. I got all of the videos except 1 completed by replacing the songs. I woke up this morning to my acceptance e-mail from YouTube for their YPP. 😊🙌🍾

Thanks!

I have a few copyright claims on my channel due to in-game music which I had no idea about. This has put a downer on my optimism for YouTube, however, after watching your video I have become a lot more well informed & relieved. GREAT WORK ! ! !

This was exactly the video we needed the past few months - we’d been rejected three times for reused content and after a lot of reading up about it and copyright claims (and changing things on our channel through trial and error without really knowing exactly what was going to work) we finally got accepted for monetisation yesterday!

For any gaming/reaction channels wondering, we got rejected when we had reaction videos up, but once all of those videos were deleted our lets plays were fine. We also had some copyright claims at the time of acceptance, but only a small percentage of our videos. Good luck to anyone else trying to navigate the muddied waters of reused content and copyright!

I’ve got several copyright claims but I always have credit to the music artist who’s content I used 😕

It’s so hard to make a video without getting copyrighted nowadays and I hate it. One of my videos reached over 300K views and I worked so hard on it only to get copyrighted and they just take my money away I find it unfair even though nobody agrees with me.

if I have like 10 copyright claims for remixing songs on my youtube channel but I have the requirements to apply for YPP, will this affect my channel or no?

I asked a few creators if I could use a part of their video but you know they are so high on their youtube throne they never answers you back ever.

I use copyrighted audio all the time because it makes my videos more exciting, BUT I don't just reupload the song, I just make it my background music to my very edited videos

Amazing Video! I talked in a video about people that are using the videos of other creators.

It's annoying that some gurus are just telling people that they can Copy-Paste Videos and make money.
