I had a copyright claim on one of my videos. I had set the privacy to private because it was only to share with family. The video was a recording of my brother in law dancing with his granddaughter at a wedding so obviously there was music in the background. Ridiculous to put a claim on private videos that only someone with a link to the video can see

I am a beginner creator in my late 50's as well.
1) My first copyright claims were very stressful for me, but I then took that video down immediately, made the changes and try to re-upload which then bounce back with the message: metadata for this video has not been saved. Which means, even after I corrected the issue, YouTube did not allow me to re-upload immediately.

2) Since then I have made so sure that I use music from the royalty free sites, give accreditation in the description box.
I was extremely disappointed to find that the royalty free site I have been using has saved a copyrigt piece of music under a different name and that that particular snippet was not copyright free. That messed up my whole video.

3) Since I am now so very particular to make sure I follow all the correct processes, huge was my surprise that 4 videos that were clean and clear all of a sudden appeared with copyright claims against them after 3 months. The one snippet was a sound effect of waves breaking.
Now this left a very bitter taste in my mouth as that means you must continiously go back and check old videos for surprise copyright claims.

As a beginner creator I was not prepared to lose my views so I opted to cut those pieces out in YouTube studio which obviously messed up the quality of those videos in question. I had to take the one video down because not much was left of it because of a classical music piece Adagio that I used. That was mind boggling to me.

I do not have the money to pay a monthly subscription to Epidemic Sound at this point. In dollar it is cheap, in South African currency it is expensive.

I now make videos without music. I know it elevates the quality of your videos, but it stays a risk.

One channel had to take down a whole bunch of videos because the site from which the music came was taken over by a company like Epidemic Sound that all of a sudden became the new licence agreement owners and then all that previously copyright free music all of a sudden was not copyright free anymore.

YouTube should find a way that you can take those videos down without losing your views, edit it outside YouTube Studio and re-upload it. That would be the ultimate resolution to this mammoth problem.

My very first upload was in 2018. It was an hour long documentary I wrote and directed for Discovery Channel. It was given a copyright strike. (It really took the wind out of my enthusiasm at the time.. being in my mid 50's and just trying to break into the "modern" way of doing things.I really felt like I had broken a law or something.) The piece is 20 years old. The original production company went out of business shortly after the series ended.. I searched for weeks but could not even find out who currently owns this now ancient content. So now I have 3 docs, some of my most high profile work, not available to be seen. :/ Honestly.. I don't give a rats about the $$$.. I would like to have my work out there.. even if only as archival material. That said.. it seems YouTube has improved it's ability to be contacted . I will try the "creator" chat option. Thanks for your insights into how to deal with this . :)

In the old days when YouTube was just getting going they would mute your entire video automatically if copyright infringement occurred. I lost the entire sound on a few vids back in the day. Irreplaceable material... erased. Its a much improved system these days. Quite fair and well structured.

I generally use copyright-free music but occasionally my videos have copyright music playing and I often leave it in as I feel it's part of the video and the overall desirability of my video is more important than the few cents I'll make from being recently monetized. A good example was I spent a night at the Full Moon party in Koh Phangan in March 2022 and I left in all the original music as that was an important part of the atmosphere. So I get no revenue from that successful video but it would have been sacrilege to remove the original audio.
And it seems it's not a strike so no problem to leave a copyright claim unresolved ... it's just that the video creator doesn't get the revenue.

Lots of my videos have a copyright claim because I make edits, so it's really hard for an editor to not get a copyright claim. Most of the songs are from really famous songs around the world and I put those songs into my edits.

When I started my channel, I made a point to use copyright free music, sound effects, and b-roll. No issues so far.

I’ve also noticed that when you trim the “copyright part” after it’s gone it will tell you another segment that has that claim as well! So it may only say one segment but there may be multiple segments further making it hard to even edit it out without ruining the whole video.

A lot of times It’s not just “music” it’s just the actual video being there. I have a video where I’m talking of jeepers creepers and there’s no audio just me talking over certain scenes and it still was copyright claimed and blocked in some territories

It's ridiculous that YouTube will say copyright striker claim on your video because somewhere in the background there was two seconds of audio barely audible.
And yet there are people constantly uploading music that I'm sure they don't have the right to be playing! And they have millions of views!!

YouTube picks and chooses who they want to go after.

How do you deal with companies who make copyright claims willy nilly? There is no requirement for claimaints to prove that the content is theirs and YouTube makes it far too easy for anyone to make copyright claims.

An example I'm thinking of is a recording of a classical music concert uploaded by the performers and the orchestra they performed with - the entire video was claimed as infringing copyright which is clearly not correct?

I keep getting copyright claims with music that Youtube recommends adding through their app. Really frustrating. How do I find the music on the app that is truly free of any copyright claims?? This has just started happening this week... so maybe a new video dealing with this specific issue is needed.

Thanks again for this Justin. I have left comments on various vidz you have posted. You are fast becoming my youtube guru! I trust your opinion and advice implicitly. I have only been a youtube creator since 2020 after retiring from my wedding video business of 25years following the outbreak of the pandemic. I now make local history and factual vlogs about my local area of the North East of England and always struggle when it comes to finding non copyright music as background to my films. I currently have 760 subscribers and make films purely for pleasure Im not sure I want to spoil my enjoyment by getting into the realms of commercial monetisation, but I also dont wish to get a copyright strike either so many thanks for this sound advice.

Never had one against me but I did use the takedown process in the Copyright tab. No worries there and it did result in the offender removing the video. Great video as usual!

So if youtube is scanning / checking all video for copyrights PRIOR TO UPLOADING. how come then people still get copyright strikes on their channels?
