That scene goes in tandem with the follow up scene, where Guts overhears Griffith basically explain that because of their relationship, Griffith doesn't see him as a friend, though Guts never knew he was truly the only exception to that rule. It's pretty sad.

That and the speech is what gave him his turning point. He became his equal out of response to what he considered a friend to him is. I hope berserk ends with him acknowledging him following his own path that he’s content with.

I think the guts' lowest moment for him at least was the lost children arc. Hurting or killing a child completely wrecks guts, so what if thiers hundreds of children monsters trying to kill you? His mind was destroyed in that fight. Love it.

Griffith felt responsible for a young boys death, and now this with Guts. I feel like this is something that they both saw in each other that goes a little beneath the surface. They both knew how it felt to feel guilt in the midst of war. It’s insane stuff.
